It's funny, because I was about to say "This isn't a sequel to KS," but then remembered that the illustrator did all the early KS drawings way back when. So I guess it really is sort of a "spiritual successor," even though there's just one writefag and he had absolutely nothing to do with KS.

Theres a few reasons why KS took so long. Mostly lack of cohesion. Certain people did not get along or outright hated each other. Namely delta, who's always acted like a self entitled child, and will throw temper tantrums when things don't go his way. This forced many people to say "fuck it" Including artists. Requiring the art assets to be redone multiple times. Writers too. With all of it's staff KS could have been done in less than a single year. But there was no cohesion, trust or comradeship in the team.

That's never the argument though. Even when it is true. It's always "OLEVN A SHIT" type comments. Some people want to gain a following, discuss it. Have an audience so they have someone to release it to. No one to beta test it, and no one to tell you what's wrong or not.

Doing games like this without a studio, on your own is almost impossible to do solo, because you will realize that there's no point if no one is even going to play it. It's vastly different from professional VN studios who have credibility, a paid team and press they can get support in. I really think for OLEVNs to become a viable medium. They need 4chan

I'm like an hour into it and it's okay. Not super exciting or anything but the art and abuse of Ren'Py's particle effects are nice, and the disability thing has turned out to be quite interesting instead of a gimmick.
Though I'll admit I'm scared that the H-scenes will be as cringeworthy as some of the dialogue has been.

I downloaded and am currently playing katawa shoujo.

I didn't read anything about it or care about it all until now.

I like the characters and the setting is an interesting twist on your typical high school slice of life. I also understand it tries to stick to conventional japanese story-telling themes but being a western-based VN its not going to have all of the cultural aspects of japan; not being japanese, this doesn't really bother me. I'm enjoying the story enough for this not to be a problem.

I figured you could have been implying it was _too_ straightforward, but that's often what makes for better writing.
I agree wholeheartedly though. It really does remind me of secondary school English classes where I would have a thesaurus at hand and try to reach the word count by prefixing every noun with an adjective or two. I'm okay for writing being colourful and interesting, but you don't have to describe everything. Especially in a medium where I can see the environment in front of me.

Best selling eroges aren't the majority, obviously, but the top couple of percent best titles (in commercial success, not necessarily quality). There are thousands of amateur and small-company productions, many of them free, that are all-ages.

The advantage of making a VN to tell your story over a comic or animation is that they are prose-heavy by their nature, but Westerners who are drawn to this medium tend to want to make a VN for the sake of making a VN because it's an eccentric Japanese thing rather than playing to their skills as creators. As such, it seems like none of the Western VN creators actually have developed their writing skills. KS has purple prose but it's still better than every other Western VN.

I like it. It's non-obtrusive and doesn't feel very repetitive. I fucking hate VNs like Shuffle! where it cycles through the same generic easygoing music then, "Whoops! Zany scene! Better cue the honky tonk piano!" then goes back to the same music. The character art is nice too. But that's it. The music and character art. That's like 2/5, so a good effort, KS devs!

Some of the effects were nice too (except for that fucking medicine name one).

I think this would have been great if it was a Ren'Py tech demo designed to look and feel nice and show off the engine. It's just a bit iffy as an actual VN. The writers have my respect though since they're not terrible and they did try, despite everything.
