On second thought, while it's definitely unhealthy, maybe it's an exxageration that smelling Medicine could be instantaneously lethal.
She only controls poison. Doesn't necessarily have to mean she controls and has access to *all* sorts of poison at all times, so you can probably safely smell the flowers without worrying about VX exposure.

And I'm sure by the time I'm done writing and posting this, someone will have pointed it out already.

Europeans used to be very very filthy, actually.

Sailors hundreds of years ago used to believe that bathing made you sick. They'd sit in their own filth for months at a time.

>Not a few children were born on board warships, and some women entered under assumed male identities, although the fact that they were not discovered is very revealing of the low incidence of bathing among the seafarers, either on deck or in the sea. The 18th-century mind preferred homely dirt and the occasional clean shirt to the terrors of cold water or the deep ocean.

Take into account that people in that age did not have the same access to information and accumulated knowledge that ordinary people have today. For example, 17th century pirates would often ignore or even discard precious gems. Part because finding treasure was not as vital as finding food, fresh water and medical supplies, but because ordinary people in that age were often ignorant of its value. Not to say that they were dumb, because they certainly weren't. They just didn't necessarily have access to that knowledge.

But then again, this is all trivia.
