protip: widescreen being "better" was propaganda started to get consumers to buy into it. it worked. the major reason monitors and televisions started becoming widescreen was that it saved the factories money as there was less waste tossed out from the screen cut-out sheets

Idiot, widescreen was the format chosen by cinematographers and photographers since the birth of cinema, it came down to shit when in the 70's and the 80's the anamorphic "full" screen stretched movie format was a gimmic to get more people into the movie theaters, it deformed and cut movies horribly to please the ignorant audience, with the renewed appreciation for cinema that came in the 2000's with 5.1sorround, HD movies, and the new CGI animation trends, It was retaken seeing as movies aspect ratios fit in widescreen without deforming the image.

The 4:3 ratio (generally named as: "Four-Three", "Four-by-Three" or "Four-to-Three") for standard television has been in use since television's origins and many computer monitors use the same aspect ratio. 4:3 is the aspect ratio defined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a standard after the advent of optical sound-on-film. By having TV match this aspect ratio, films previously photographed on film could be satisfactorily viewed on TV in the early days of the medium (i.e. the 1940s and the 1950s). When cinema attendance dropped, Hollywood created widescreen aspect ratios (such as the 1.85:1 ratio mentioned earlier) in order to differentiate their industry from the TV.

Only problem with your theory is when movies are ported from theaters to TV, you lose all of the detail on the sides of the screen. "Satisfactory" indeed.

Tv works different than movies, man.
Cinematographers didn't make the decision of widescreen in a whim, they discussed this over the years, and in the end they set up deciding for the golden ratio, that was already present in math and paintings, resulting in what one could call widescreen.

>> No.802508

It's not "graphics," you ignorant twat. It's THE REST OF THE MOVIE. Go watch Ben Hur in 4:3 for all I care, I'll be enjoying it as it was intended to be seen.
