Am I the only one that likes to combine BOTH fanon and canon interpretations? Yes, she's terribly lonely and longing for affection, but the reason she's foreveralone.jpg is because she's significantly OFF, somehow.

I mean, think about it. She rarely leaves her house and spends every waking moment hell-bent on creating artificial life, which is perhaps one step removed from trying to materialize MAI WAIFU by thinking hard enough. It's the classic Galatea scenario; an artist so incapable of relating to real people that they desperately try to make their fantasy friends manifest.

There's a difference between living alone and being a NEET. But you still make a good point; she doesn't have to be "lonely." Her goal, her obsession has isolated her for years; it's doubtless she actively feels lonely or anything; none of this fanon "a bloo bloo" angst they like to show. She doesn't notice it anymore.

That doesn't mean it hasn't affected her though. Like damage, a missing piece of life. Some people are natural loners, do best that way, others do better with company but don't suffer much for lack of it.

But some people do.

You could go anywhere on the spectrum with that; a lurking yanadrae when somebody manages to pierce her shell and she realizes what she's been missing, and wants more at any cost (I admit a yanadre Alice menacing Marisa would be interesting for a change,) or an Alice who's "weirdness" is just totally atrophied people skills with no relation to her goal/obsession, or you could go full-out and make her some totally whacked dollmaker who always feels "off," somehow.

Though I'm not sure what the appeal is of that last one; the anti-fanon peeps seem to prefer it, though. Canon says she talks tough but is really a coward; I always thought far too little attention was paid to that aspect of her character.

That's not a bad interpretation. I prefer to think of it as self-imposed isolation, not so much out of a dislike or distaste for human contact so much as a general disinterest. She's got nothing against people and she's nice to them when they show up, but they're a distraction from her work. Not to mention she needs /someone/ to show off her dolls to.

It's a shame, Alice is one of the most well-defined characters in Touhou, with that quip about being afraid of losing at full power and all. Nobody really digs into that aspect of her.

This is exactly why most popular depictions of wizards show them in bathrobes and sandals: most often they're bumming around the house on a Saturday afternoon with a pipe and a newspaper when the page comes in and they can't be arsed to get dressed for a mere consultation call. To summarize, the real canon Alice is about halfway between the murderous bitch and stuttering tsundere extreme opposites. She is aggressive, very haughty, and manages to stay elegant and composed even in battle. However, she does things that many observers find strange and disturbing about her (such as nailing up dolls in the forest or buying drugs from Eirin), and she is also insecure about maintaining her appearance of strength.
