The majority of anime are worse than the things FOX airs.

Pretty much. Even in America, while it's not bad to say you like certain cartoons, if you were a complete otaku about them you'd be shunned. The thing you aren't noting are shows aimed at otaku, filled with perverse fantasies and female characters who focus on a specific stereotype that caters to the fanbase. Any regular person who isn't an otaku will see this as disgusting and terrible to what should be a kid-oriented medium. Imagine the same thing for american cartoons and all the groups screaming "Think of the children!"

>> No.772561

Depth in anime isn't limited to what Evangelion fanboys say it is. Even anime like Baccano and as much as I hate to say it, Gurren Lagann, have a lot to speak of.

Teen = still a kid. How many fully-grown adult characters are protaganists anime? By that, I mean mid 20's to 40's. There's also a big-brother effect where younger kids will look up to an older, but not fully adult character.

While most anime are either generic Joseph Campbell monomyth bullshit or 'nerdy guy X hangs around a dozen beautiful women' repeated ad nauseum every season to milk money from idiots in Japan.

A good anime is as rare as a good American TV show, maybe even more.

>> No.772584

>>if you were a complete otaku about them you'd be shunned

same with any other type of fans. Sport fans, Celebrity fans, game fans and music fans are all shunned by people who don't understand them. Example: Dragonforce, Halo series, Michael Jackson.

>> No.772585

>>772561

I'm not trying to say that there isn't depth in anime at all. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is probably the best written story in any medium. However, the average show people watch has very little depth or is so full of pretentiousness that the depth that is in the show is only based around what the writers view.

>> No.772701

>>772644

I wouldn't say it has a very broad audience, but there are shows that allow it to appeal to a broad audience. People who like history and politics may like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but odds are will find almost everything else in anime as shit except for a couple of other shows.

The original idea is that almost all of anime isn't very deep, though there are some notable and magnificent exceptions, and is primarily for kids/teens. The general public, in turn, views this as a medium for kids/teens and shuns otaku who center their life and fantasies around it.

>> No.772703
