I'm thinking about getting into Touhou. I hear that it takes a lot practice and excellent coordination, so I thought it'll be something I could enjoy.

Seeing the wiki, I notice there is a lot in the series. So, since Touhou seems to be one of /jp/'s things, I figure I could come to you guys for some advice.

First, for someone who never plays these sort of games, which one would be the best for newbies?

Second, which one is often consider the hardest in the series?

Finally third, what are some advice /jp/ can share?

Your information would most be appreciated.

>First, for someone who never plays these sort of games, which one would be the best for newbies?

7 or 10. They are reasonably easy and the mechanics are simple to work with.

>Second, which one is often consider the hardest in the series?

11 on normal mode, 12 on hard and lunatic. 2 has the hardest extra.

>Finally third, what are some advice /jp/ can share?

Don't play on easy, when in doubt hold shift.

>> No.7537021

Easiest: Imperishable Night

Hardest: Subterranean Animism

Tips: Start on Normal and don't get angry when you die. A lot of the fun of Touhou lies in fanmade stuff. Don't mind the terribad art.

>I'm thinking about getting into Touhou.
Why?

If you want to join circlejerks of touhou doujins and yukkuri: Well congrats you don't even have to play the games.

If you want to play a good bullet hell shooter: You're looking at the wrong place, Touhou is mediocre at best.

>> No.7537038

1: PCB
2: UFO or SA
3: Learn from your mistakes -- you'll be making quite a few. Learn to instinctively know where your hitbox is so you're not looking at it 100% of the time. Practice, replays and Youtube are your friends. Set goals that are just out of your ability and work toward it.

And the easy modo meme is old. Play it until you're confident enough to dabble in Normal. Then Normal until Hard. Hard until Lunatic. Unless you learn better by getting tossed head-irst into something.

But, Touhou bullets are so slow you don't even need to death-bomb out of trouble most of the time.

Just remember that "confident enough to dabble in" doesn't necessarily mean 1cc. Don't stick to any difficulty with the benchmark of 1cc'ing it. Once you can complete it and think you can 1cc it in a good/lucky run, give the next difficulty a try. The 1cc should come easily after playing on a higher difficulty.

How much time have you given it? I try not to judge games until I've earned the second extend, generally.

But even so, not everyone has to like every shooter. As long as you like other top tier games, your taste is unharmed.

Pretty much. I started playing around on Hard around the time I got near-1cc runs. It's amusing how some cards drastically change with just a few added bullets.

Really, look at Icicle Fall on Easy and Normal. Just one bullet changes the whole thing.

One thing that people aren't saying, don't stick to just one game. Play a few of them so you learn to dodge different patterns and not get into a rut dodging the same old stuff.

I've played it a few times, admittedly I'm not very good at these sorts of games though. The only games I play regularly are Touhou and Fever SOS, which is probably my favorite one by far even though it destroys me worse than any of the other games.

Copypasted from the master himself:
Only way to get better is play the higher difficulty you're aiming for originally.

Trying to 1cc normal? Play hard a few times, and beat it even if you continue. When you go back to normal mode, it will feel like ezmodo.

Only problem is when you get to the point of lunatic, there isn't anything else harder than that. But once you get that good you know every spellcard and its just about reflexes

>> No.7537111

>>7537095
By the time you get to Lunatic, after playing your way through Easy/Normal, you should have the flow of the stages and bosses down pretty pat, and have learned what there is to learn.

That or you start playing 2nd loop Cave shooters.

1 - PCB or MoF
2 - SA
3 - Learn which bullets are aimed at you, and learn to control them instead of letting them control you. Also learn when to hold still, when to nudge yourself gently to the side, and when when to dive across the screen.

I'm still buttdevastated about the apparently cancelled Dangun Feveron / Fever SOS XBLA port. I love that game.

Ketsui is a tough game though. Maybe you would like something that eases you in a bit more, like Espgaluda. That's another great game.

>> No.7537125

>>7537114
Crimzon Clover's Simple mode has a pretty good difficulty curve for beginners. And if you have a Flashcard or whatever, Ketsui Death Label also has a decent, though it's not as lengthy a game. It does get you used to no-hit box dodging and plunging into bullet streams faster than what Touhou normally throws out.

I might give that one another go some time. Admittedly it was another one of those games I didn't get into, although that was more because I didn't give it much of a chance. Maybe I'll try it again soon, but I'm not sure.

>>7537204

Apparently the only reason it's considered easy is because of the fact that you can abuse Spell Practice or something. I'm not very good at these games, so I find IN Extra to be pretty tough. Then again, they're all tough in my case. Ran is currently the easiest for me though.

>> No.7537224

PCB has a good learning curve and, unlike EoSD, shows your hitbox. For someone starting out, knowing why you died and how close you are to death is pretty important.

>> No.7537240

>>7537175

EoSD, without patching, works by very different mechanics than the other games (no visible hitbox, different sizes of bullet hitboxes I think, almost no deathbomb time, fewer bullets and less dense bullet patterns to make up for different mechanics). It is a terrible game to start learning how to play. I still ruin my ability to play the other games in the series every time I seriously try to play it.

>> No.7537239

>First, for someone who never plays these sort of games, which one would be the best for newbies?
Touhou 7 - Perfect Cherry Blossom is the perfect game when trying to get into this
Touhou 6 - Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil is also a good choice though might prove to be a bit more difficult for beginners
The Touhou games 1-5 are irrelevant. Inb4 buttmad
8 is far too easy mode and will build bad habits, 9 is a gimmick, 10 will give you bad habits of bomb spamming, 11 will be FAR to difficult for someone just getting into the games...same for 12.

>Second, which one is often consider the hardest in the series?
It's usually between Touhou 11 - Subterranean Animism or Touhou 12 - Unidentified Fantastic Object...Personally I think the former is harder.

>Finally third, what are some advice /jp/ can share?
-Practice makes perfect, a good chunk of this game is just memory anyway.
-Never just stay at the bottom of your screen
-Normal too hard? play some Lunatic Boot camp. After waves of lunatic bullets, you'll find fucktons of new paths between bullets on Normal. Also they'll seem to move much slower. Shit's like being fucking Neo in the Matrix, man.
-Hold shift for focused movement

If you invent a game, it doesn't automatically make you the best on it (well, it does when you are the only one who knows about it...)

I recommended OP to start at easy mode because he said he never played this kind of games, but he could grind on normal and eventually he'll get good at it, in the end, everyone can become a GOD in any game if you grind enough.

Ok OP, now you are going to play SA Lunatic for the next 5 years.

I don't believe he argued about their quality, but rather that they're irrelevant, which has a ring of truth to it since the only thing Touhou 6+ have in common with the first 5 is Reimu, the Hakurei Shrine, the Yingyang Orbs, Marisa, and her ability Final Spark. Oh, and Alice and the grimoire. I don't believe anything else plot-wise transfers.
