It went something like this.

I flashed my BIOS then my OS wouldn't boot up. I tried just about everything including removing the mobo battery and clearing the CMOS, reformatting my OS (which I just did the day prior). For two days I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get any OS to boot up.

Then it hit me, the mobo flash reset my RAM timings. The settings were off and the voltage was too low. I even saw that they were off when playing around in the BIOS but it just didn't register in my mind to fix them. Set the timings and voltage correctly and reinstalled my OS.

This was my face.

Just what were you doing? That's not a good idea, if you were just updating it that's fine but i sure do hope you weren't trying to put some custom voodoo on it.

I couldn't stand to lose my media, most of my programs are backed up on .iso, 20k+ images, movies. That'd take more time to rebuild then I care for.

Of course I wouldn't go full paranoia-mode and get a RAID array set up, but I keep my more precious things on thumb drives and DVDs I keep in a cool dark place.

I would think so but the error I got was a BIOS error and after a quick 2 minute search I decided to just update my BIOS since I hadn't done it in years, if ever.

I still get that error sometimes and just restart the VM and it works. The fuck if I know.

You're probably right.

It was the right version. I went through half the older BIOS versions for my board but the problem was with the ram settings. I may not have needed to update but it did add some nice features since the default was like version 2 and I updated to version 12.

What sort of error did you get when booting, did you attempt to repair windows with the installation disk.

I always keep a DVD of linux with a liveCD feature on it, just in case windows breaks, all i have to do is pop the DVD in and boot in to linux and grab any valuable files and get them backed up before doing anything further

The error I got was something about the install was changed which led me to suspect the flash messed up the load setting on the OS or something.

I tried repairing it but it only froze up before doing anything. Windows disk, Ubuntu disk, Ubuntu live USB, all froze. The only thing I could get to boot was shit like magic boot disk or memtest.

also; of all the things you would like to reclaim of your /jp/ folder and what not...why reaction images? I guess it'd make sense since most of them are cropped from larger images and as such not reverse searchable, but you could have just rebuilt it slowly from what you saw posted every so often

I could, but this way is quicker.

I only lost a small amount of data, which included whatever I chose not to backup and the random pics in the my pictures folder and stuff on two of my partitions which included my reaction image folder and /jp/ folder inside that. It wasn't a huge loss but I'll certainly remember to backup more then once weekly from now on.

Over all I did learn somethings from this experience, including to remember to check the ram from now on so I chalk it up to a mostly positive ordeal.
