Just wondering: what is the appeal of Touhou? Feels like it's just a bullet hell shooter with a bunch of random characters thrown in here and there.

For me personally its the characters and music and porn. Played the games, but not really big on them.
Its Japanese mythological creatures drawn as little girls (though not always) who wear frilly dresses, funny hats and battle eachother with an assortment of BOOLET then have tea parties and alcohol. Theres also the fact that ZUN, the alcoholic creator, seems to be pretty cool guy about the (sometimes crazy) fandom making shitloads of fanwork of Touhou.

But why am I wasting my time responding to what is quite probably a troll? ALL THREADS MUST BE REPLIED TO

Bullet hell shooter with random characters is right - except the characters are great and lovable. And the music is generally fantastic. The games are for many people more compelling than the average stg because of the characters and music. It's moe.
