I still don't really get why one should bother with Renpy over say, the various N/ON-Scripter builds, or a custom engine altogether were it to include some other arbitrary something.

I think he really has.

Is he implying that visual novels require significant enough resources to warrant such intrusive prophylactic data collection?

Unless the medium takes a fucking quantum leap forward in terms of game play, which we all know is unlikely, none of this even makes sense on a conceptual level.

- The version of Ren'Py and the platform it is running on.
- The name of the video card manufacturer.
- The version of OpenGL and the current driver version.
- Information about the limits of the hardware (texture size, number of multitexture units, etc.)
- Information about available extensions (if known).

>> No.7392578

I think the ironic part is that he wants to know why some games run suboptimally and it hasn't occurred to him that HIS SHIT CODING might have more to do with it than OpenGL

KS uses renpy 6.11, and they aren't upgrading so as to keep people from porting the game to android, psp, ds, etc.
So while it ~may~ steal your information, it won't be going to this fat lard.

>> No.7392583

About anything Microsoft or Google have already done this for years and years already.
Then again, it doesn't make it any better, and this data isn't exactly sent to the same established players, but that might only be a marginal issue.

Don't know of any interesting Renpy stuff though, so alright. May or may not check out Katawa Shoujo in some distant future. Then again, as it is now it looks as if even Duke Nukem forever might beat them in terms of getting released.

I deleted my post since that guy apparently showed up and he can do a better job explaining it than I can (if he feels like it)

But the ks dev team has been really shitty about people porting the game elsewhere because they think its the same as using their resources.

>> No.7392627

>>7392618
Well, of course it is, but I don't see any reason to take measures against it. As long as the person's not getting any profit of his own off of it it's no different from piracy, which is going to happen whether they do anything about it or not.

I don't think so, but mostly just on precedent. Did anyone flip out when Cave Story got ported to everything? What about translations, why are those different (that's full on altering text!)? But this isn't really the thread for this discussion.

I think he was talking about stuff like the PSP homebrew.

>> No.7392675

>>7392643
That's not what I meant, I meant devs taking measures to restrict a free game to one platform.
I was thinking more of how it got moved to phones and psp and such and Pixel(?) was actually pretty supportive of having his work reach a wider audience. And again, why is it different to translate a game to reach more people, but putting it on a phone or game system (with homebrew) is forbidden?

I understand not wanting people to use sprites or music in their own games or for profit, but that's clearly different.

(This is the Ren'Py creator here.)

Right now, I haven't decided if this is something I want to go ahead with. The current design has a checkbox, on the quit screen, that controls if data is sent or not.

I'll just point out that nothing has been decided or implemented at this time. This is me throwing out an idea for a function (this isn't really a feature, but it may help me implement other features) for a future version of Ren'Py - and feedback from people will help me decide if it goes in or not.
