I dunno, but I've only been studying Japanese for a year and can read most of the thread just fine, even posted a bit as well. And this is from the comfort of my own home. If you're spending 3 years in Japan and don't know much Japanese, it's only logical to assume you're not actually doing any Japanese activities over there to really learn the language. It's not an uncommon story, happens all the time. People visit a country and live there for years but never learn the language because they sit down with a channel they find in their native language at home, and only talk to people that speak their native language. So it doesn't matter where they live, they're not really learning anything because they refuse to learn. I can't imagine someone spending 3 years in Japan and actively learning every single day wouldn't be able to read this thread. I don't even study hardcore. The only hardcore studying I've ever done was kanji grinding. After that I took it easy, but I at least did at least some Japanese studies every single day so that I didn't fall into the "I'll do it tomorrow" cycle and keep momentum.

Japanese teachers can be helpful, but in most classes the pace is too slow. They teach you like 5 kanji a week, when you should be learning 10 a day. And once you're mostly done with kanji, there are still a million jukugo and hiragana phrases you have to learn. Japanese teachers don't really let on how vast the language is.

The smart thing to do is to use classes as small supplements while doing the majority of the learning on your own. Having a native speaker that can guide you along the way is always nice, so is strengthening the foundation of your knowledge through course work. But you shouldn't think that you'll learn the language by attending classes, because it won't work. I'm sure there are non-English native speakers in this thread awake right now (its their time zone after all) that can tell you that they learned English through immersion. I doubt many of them attended classes and didn't take initiative on their own to learn via web comics or video games or whatever.

For anyone taking Japanese classes, please don't think that you'll really learn the language from a 3 hour per week course, because you won't. Practice every day, learn on your own, use classes as formal guidance, but it should never be your main source of Japanese.

In Japanese classes you can tell who learns on their own and who uses the class as their main mode of studying. Not because they make the most mistakes, even studying outside the class may not prepare you for some of the grammatical rules, since you'd most likely have learned them in a different manner and it may or may not be cemented in your head yet.

But the ones that have the horrible accents and pause to read every word? The ones that read every syllable separately instead of making them flow together? Those are usually the ones that don't do anything outside of class. But I'm not trying to make fun of them, I'm just saying that you don't want to be like that. Learn on your own 90% more than you're learning from class. That doesn't mean cramming grammar books like crazy, just doing a set amount of kanji per day and immersing yourself in Japanese (turn those subtitles off if you're watching anime) help.

In the beginning I felt like it was pointless to immerse myself so much if I knew so little, but I'm really glad I did. Even if you don't think you're understanding, you're gradually molding your brain into being able to pick up Japanese, and into tearing down the sound filter. You're picking up on words without realizing. There were plenty of times I didn't know a word, but when thinking to myself in Japanese it would pop up and I'd think "wait, does that mean what I think it means?" and look it up to find that it does. But I wouldn't remember where I first heard the word or how many times I heard it, but it was obviously planted in my head without me knowing.

Reading manga, watching Japanese stuff, listening to Japanese music (actually focusing on the lyrics) all count to Japanese learning. And they're just as important as grinding vocabulary or kanji or whatever. In the end, seeing and hearing the language in a natural environment really does have great importance.

I keep reading eroge/manga in Japanese, but I get so demotivated when I read the English translation equivalent and realize how wrong my comprehension of mostly everything I read in Japanese was. I comprehend everything too literally and the context gets fucked up, then nothing makes sense at all. I can truly understand what I'm reading maybe about 30% of the time, the rest I just get a vague gist of. If it was a nukige then 70%.

I can read and listen like a boss but when it comes to making my own sentances I dont know what the hell I'm doing

Yeah, so i've been learning for like 1 1/2 years. The worst part is learning vocabulary. It takes for fucking ever. You seriously have to play eroge ALL FUCKING DAY (which is okay really) for shit to sink in. At least I do. And IMO it is a good idea to straight up memorize like at least 700 kanji before you play anything. But after that learn them on the fly. And don't use fucking flashcards after that, especially for vocab. That shit is a waste of time. All you need to do is read your fucking ass off, read guides and ask questions.

I find japanese vocab hard to learn because completely different words can mean the same thing, and words that are very similar can mean completely the different thing. But its the same in english really.

To really learn some vocab, you need to play/read something long. Where they say the same shit over and over. Find a short eroge, play it every day till it's done, and you should come out of that shit with a game under your belt and a bunch of new vocab.
