'sup /jp/. Since I've given up on 1cc-ing the games on lunatic I decided to do the next best thing: learn to play Touhou music. I play an accordion and am not very good at learning music by ear (I'm pretty new to playing music) so I decided to use DMBN's scores for piano (http://www.youtube.com/user/DMBN)) and playing the melody. Now, I wonder if any other anons here play the accordion and could help me with some tips on adapting the piano score to the accordion. How should I adapt the bass part? How can I adapt the melody to compensate for having a smaller keyboard? Things like that. Any help would be very appreciated.

So, playing Touhou music general thread I guess.

Touhou accordian arrange? I'd like to hear this

>I play an accordion

I am so hard right now. But you can probably find redo's for the piano accordian(which is still an instrument I think) as touhou fans love putting out scores for weird instruments like the thermin and the ukulele.

this tiny, tiny clever commander arrange by doppelman is pretty good, you should take a look at it

Do want, Any idea where I might start looking? By the way, the piano accordion is the one with a keyboard instead of buttons (it's the one I play actually).

Also, does anyone know what program does DMBN use for his videos? I'd like to see the keyboard while I play.

Just a thought. Would the accordion be played by Merlin or Lyrica? It has a keyboard but its sound is more like a wind instrument.

The group sensitive heart I think did some accordion stuff.

http://forums.ichigos.com/showthread.php?9325-Request-Touhou-piano-sheet-(any-sheet-related)

has a bunch of piano stuff

I'll keep looking but do ask again on a night I'm sober. Which isn't tonight as I learned my grandfather tried to kill himself because my aunt's a crack addicted whore. woah too much information.

Thanks, brophistopheles. I'll check that thread. Seems promising. Only song I've managed to play so far has been Green-Eyed Jealousy (shit sounds SO cash on the accordion)

I'm thinking of starting a Touhou "band" with a couple of friends that like touhou. None of us plays an instrument very well yet (I'm pretty new to the accordion) but it seems like a fun way to practice. One of my friends wants to play the keyboard, we can get someone who's learning violin and the other guy isn't sure what to play. What would be a good addition? I'm thinking guitar to give it a cool folksy tune.

>> No.7219304

>>7219300
If you want a folksy tune try for a banjo or bassjo if you can find one.

Though both of those instruements require alot of practice to play.

>> No.7219309

>>7219304
Good idea. I was thinking more of a latin folk thing since lolmexico, but the banjo sounds like a really fun thing.

Wow, I just started playing the accordion pretty recently myself (about 2 months ago) with the intention of learning touhou songs. I didn't expect to find someone else on /jp/ with the exact same goal.

I've been mostly trying to learn songs by ear just using a score as a reference if i can find it. Don't try to make heavy use of chords with your right hand unless they're essential to the song - just focus on boiling things down to a single-note melody. Most of the chord work should come from your left hand (since its a lot easier to just press one button)

For the bass part, start with just figuring out the notes/chords to play. obviously look at the chords in the bass clef and try to play them on your left hand. Generally, since the chords are organized by circle of fifths, the chords you use should be pretty close together. If you just follow the score, though, you might have huge jumps, and then you have to make a decision on whether to just simplify things so as not to make an 8-button jump or whatever. Simplify as much as possible first and then see if you can add more later.

Once you figure out what notes/chords you want to play on the bass side then you can think about the rhythm. I've either done the sort of standard accordion oom-pah-pah (bass-chord-chord) rhythm or otherwise just holding the chord down. Anything more complicated than that is too hard for me to do without losing track of the right hand.

what size of accordion do you have? If you don't have 120 bass some of the crazy keys of touhou songs might be out of your range, so you might have to transpose.

(well i wrote a lot but i don't know if i helped any...)

>I play an accordion
If it's not a button accordion, it's not a REAL accordion. ಠ_ృ

Arranging complex songs for solo accordion is always a pain in the ass, especially when you're not an experienced arranger. I can't really give you any catch-all advice on, for example, how to adapt the bass, since it's all very dependant on the original song and how you want it to sound - and also dependant on what system your bass is using. If you have the option to turn melody bass on, you could go for the baroque route.

I've been wanting to do Suwako's theme for a while now, but I left my accordion at my dad's place. Think I'll go get it this weekend.

>>7219315
This is a really pleasant coincidence. You're really helpful, bro. My accordion is a 120 bass, it goes from F4 to A6 IIRC. I know what you mean about the range. My accordion has a pretty good range and I still lacked one key to reach the highest note in Green-Eyed Jealousy. So, do you play button or keyboard accordion?

>> No.7219334

>>7219315
>(well i wrote a lot but i don't know if i helped any...)

If it didn't help OP I still read it, I bought an old button accordion at a garage sale years ago and they fascinate me. I only play brass instruments because my reaction time is too slow for guitar(one of my dreams is too play bass like les claypool) but I love the sound accordions make.

It also makes it sound like you're playing a children's song, unless it's very fast and/or arpeggio-heavy. Of course, as always, these things depend on the song, and for a beginner this is good enough advice. Playing harmonies on accordion is however easier and much more natural than it is on many other instruments, and it's something that you really should practice early on.

I do doubt that arranging the music yourself is a very good start for learning to play any instrument.

I have a keyboard accordion, 120/41. I don't know anything about button accordions.
I started by following the free accordion lessons on this page:
http://duaneschnur.com/accordion/lessons.htm
but man... that is some really slow boring stuff to work through and a lot of it is "this is what a half note is". Can't complain for free lessons, though.

>>7219331
Thanks for the advice, I'll push myself to play more right-hand harmonies where i can. Lots of accordion players in here!

i've been wanting to learn to play my favorite touhou tracks as well, but i can't read music and figuring them out by ear takes forever.

is there a way to extract the midi files from the games? it would be great to dump them into an editor so i can see them in a piano roll format and copycat from there.

However, there are no MIDIs after PoFV demo and between SoEW and EoSD. Also, some MIDIs (notably, EoSD's) are different from the lossless versions.
