I actually bought a subscription for that new service they have, iknow.jp. I usually hate paying for online services, but in this case I think it's worth it. I never really put much effort into specific vocabulary, but I've been progressing a lot now that I started with this.

Considering the amount of time you would waste with an ineffective method like Rosetta Stone, the subscription would definitely be worth the price in comparison. At least use Anki or something if it has to be free.

I'll just say in general, though, not necessarily regarding this exact service. There are two common mistakes people make with buying study materials:
-Thinking that the more you pay for study materials, the less effort you have to put into studying (the sort of attitude that makes people actually go out and buy Rosetta Stone)
-Thinking that free materials are good enough, and denying themselves relatively cheap purchases that would speed up their efforts

Not that much, really. I was just saying that you shouldn't be afraid of paying for study materials, not that most free/piratable methods are not superior.

-When it comes to the kana, you should be able to do it so fast that it would be a waste to pay for anything to teach you
-When it comes to grammar, the best resource I've found is Tae Kim's grammar guide, which is free
-When it comes to kanji, the method I liked best was kanjidicks + anki, both which are free. This tends to be a little subjective, though, some people seem to prefer other methods, but I really liked this one and would recommend anyone to at least try it
-When it comes to vocabulary, I have yet to find a really good free method. That's where I'd recommend iknow.jp. I wish it was possible to just use Anki here, but it's not really that easy if you want to learn both the meaning and the reading for each word, and the premade decks will sometimes bullshit you with poorly defined words. If you absolutely need something free, I would recommend getting Anki, downloading a decent book for common Japanese vocabulary, and make separate Anki decks for meanings and readings, and add each word manually, and never start on a word before getting at least one example sentence. But if you have some money to spare, I think iknow.jp would be much more efficient. Some people also recommend eroge for building vocabulary. Personally, I think it's vital as supplement, and will eventually become your main source of immersion, but too hard to start building vocabulary from, unless you're disciplined to stop every time you encounter a new word and repeat it to yourself many times (I could never be motivated to do this in the middle of reading something interesting).

You can select when starting a new course.

Personally I made sure to have the 1000 most common kanji down before starting on vocabulary, which I think worked really well. It always frustrated me to try learning new words when I wouldn't have any how they were written when trying to actually read something.

for me, i have a tough time memorizing kanji without some kind of context. i don't know how you could memorize 1000 of them like that.

honestly, what's helped me the most is japanese in mangaland. i bought them mostly to learn grammar but a lot of the kanji has stuck. (except i'm sure my stroke order is all wrong)

Kanjidicks. The examples he gives is enough context for me.

>>7217306
How do you mean "sorted by meaning"? You mean kanji with similar meaning sorted together, like one group for color, and another for stuff related to politics, etc? I don't think that would be particularly practical, since you would be learning a lot of complicated kanji that you'll rarely need just because they're in a particular group. And too many kanji have double meanings, so they wouldn't fit in just one group.

Closest you get is probably is probably something like this
