What are you talking about? He starts out with 7 def and if you give him wounds healed he gets 5 spd. That's better than anyone for a long damn while Sure he's not Maede Keiji but he's a pretty strong rock. I always hang onto him especially once he and Ranmaru are married.

Nogiku obviously has the best stats but it takes a while before you can get her.
Overall I'd say Senhime, you can get her early, high speed, all guard is pretty good once you get enhanced initial guard and fellow troops revenge is great.

The best are Nogiku and Yoshihisa, but both are hard to get (especially Yoshihisa), so you'll mostly have to settle for Senhime and Teru who are basically weaker versions of each respectively.

All guard footsoldier for when the opponent has dangerous ranged attackers, counterattack 2 footsoldier when they're loaded with melee (or ranged that you can keep from attacking like mikos and tacticians)

I would say Mori Teru and Shimazu Yoshihisa without doubt. That regeneration ability is truly kind of weak, and at the expense of another ability as well.
Mori Teru and Shimazu Yoshihisa still have terrific stats, but more importantly, they have the amazing "Counterattack Rate Up 2", which triples counter attack damage. When they attack you, you are actually the one winning the encounter even though you are on the defensive side. Tripple counter attack damage is simply amazing.
(And there is even the added benefit of the Dragonfly Cutter, which can improve the counterattack of footsoldiers even further)

So yeah. Top Tier stats, and the best fotsoldier ability.
You can solely focus on protecting your friends, and kill off the enemy side with prowess.
