Apparently they are planning on having Australian servers though, which given the heavy reliance on low-ping is a very good thing.

That being said, I'm very disappointed that they've decided to censor the game in spite of utterly overwhelming opposition.
If they put in place some method to circumvent or revert the changes on a client-side basis I'll certainly play the game, but I'll have to pass otherwise, regardless of the server allocation.

Been planning to play Elin since they were revealed, and I am not in the least bit bothered that they are putting pants on pretty much all the slutty cloth armor. So no, the situation only sucks for people who planned on playing Elin in the March test, which is a very select group in the first place. As far as the actual game itself? You know why they listened to moralfags on this issue? Because this is a pay to play game; they have a commercial aspect to consider. Why risk alienating the people who are most likely going to bring them the most profit? If this was free to play, maybe these complaints about Elin no longer being as exposed as you'd like would have more leverage, and probably be a bit more valid. Business is business.

My biggest concern with TERA is that they won't add attack speed latency compensation for the western release. Right now the game waits for however long your ping is before it executes the attack you told it to use, which means that on a warrior that's supposed to attack once every 0.4 seconds, a 200ms ping means you attack 2/3rds as fast as a 0ms warrior. This also means you're totally screwed in PVP since you can't make your target flinch enough to lock them down like you should be able to.

Aion had the exact same problem and they never fixed it. The community reps in Aion responded to a huge in-depth post explaining exactly what it would do (which was 100% correct), and said that they didn't think it was a problem. I dunno. I really like the art style of eastern MMOs, but the non-responsive dev teams that think everyone lives in Korea/Japan really burn me out.

Here's a video showing off the difference latency can make in terms of attack speed in this game. It's not pretty.

Since when are MMOs rated?

And why single out the race that is the ONLY reason for playing your stupid grind-for-fun korean shit mmo?

The only reason anybody plays korean MMOs is because they want to be the little girl. Not because they want to run around wearing pants or whatever the fuck they're going to do.

There's hundreds of korean MMOs out these with way more skimpy lolis that this.

They need to westernize the gameplay, not the character designs.

I'm actually looking forward to a real pay to play game so it shuts out the retards and the shitty pay to win you get with f2p MMOs. I'm sick to goddamn death of dying by vanguard fencers and lily rain eve's in Cosmic Break. This would be much more fun I believe.

The changes to Elin make me very very very sad. Fans already know what she looks like dumbasses and can find pictures of her online, changing it now is far beyond too late and can only serve to piss off the fans, it's like taking out the lesbians in Sailor Moon when all the little girls I knew watching it would talk about how 'they were lesbians in Japan but now they're cousins'.

So I'm torn between wanting to play something that looks delicious and has taken out the shitty cash shop for profit and not wanting to pay for a game that thinks it needs to censor things for an American audience. I want to play but I also want to beat the shit out of the devs for being morons.

There is no auto-attack, which is the core issue here.

It's a TPS dropped into an MMO world. It's the same situation as any shooter, and people with shit pings have never been able to compete on even grounds in those.

Unless there is some magic fix that can let people with shit connections somehow have 20 ping, I can't see changes to accommodate them as anything other than doing terrible things to the game. As an example, if you've played Cosmic Break, you've probably seen the ridiculous effects that "accommodating" for people with shit pings can have on gameplay.

The thing I fear most with their proclaimed "Westernization" of the game is a change to core gameplay. If I wanted a normal sterilized MMO, I would have bought RIFT when it came out recently.

Try to stop using 'cancer', it makes it obvious you have been here for a very short time and come from /b/ or a board heavily influenced by it (/a/, /v/). Which brings us to how online game threads have been a tradition on /jp/ for a significant amount of time (look up the timestamp of posts regarding Megaten or Aispace on the archive), while 'entry level VNs' have been discussed to death, some of them before /jp/ even existed.

You are coming into an established community and becoming frustrated when it's pointed out nobody has any interest in discussing a 'board related' topic that everyone already discussed to exhaustion. Then take that frustration out on a thread you judge to not be relevant, according to your own made up rules or the official rules that were always ambiguous and pointless. When there is another board willing to discuss your topic of choice. All because 'you browse whatever board you feel like'.

You let the player press the button before the attack is ready, and let the server execute it as soon as it is. WoW does it, Guild Wars does it, plenty of games do it. There's really no issue with trying to figure out a solution.

Whether it's FPS style gameplay is irrelevant. The problems you see with ping in FPS have nothing to do with the attack speed problem. In FPS games, ping hurts your reaction time. There's no effect on how often you can shoot a gun whatsoever. If FPS games don't have the problem, there's no reason TERA should.

There's plenty of ways to fix the attack speed problem. You could have the client start the attack animation and skill cooldown immediately when you press the button, then cancel them if the server doesn't approve. You could let the player press the button 200ms before the skill is finished, then let the server use it as soon as it's ready. You could let the player queue one skill in advance.

I've heard people raving about how FPS gameplay means ping is unresolvable when they don't even have a clue what ping is or how to fix it. If you have something to say about ping, give specific reasons.

>> No.7132610

>>7124149
First off, do you even know what auto-attack is or how it's used? Mages, Warlocks, and Priests in WoW don't have auto-attack, yet they don't have any attack speed problems due to ping. In fact, whether anyone has auto-attack at all is irrelevant since the vast majority of damage for all classes in WoW comes from activated attacks just like it does in TERA, yet there is still no problems with ping penalizing attack speed.

Second, what do FPS games have to do with attack speed latency problems? FPS games don't have attack speed problems due to latency either. It doesn't matter what your ping is it won't affect how fast or often you can shoot. Ping affects your reaction time. That holds true in FPS games and TERA. It's irrelevant to your attack speed in FPS games and it should also be irrelevant in TERA.

There's plenty of ways to fix the attack speed problem. You could have the client start the attack animation and skill cooldown immediately when you press the button, then cancel them if the server doesn't approve. You started out saying that no auto-attack means you can't just have an auto-attack toggle like the guy you responded to was saying. You then went on to say that Third-Person shooters have this same problem which is absolutely not the case. In fact, third person shooters DO have auto-attack since you can simply hold down the button and fire at top-speed no matter what your ping.

You mentioned Cosmic Break as an example of the problems latency compensation can cause, and while I'm not familiar with Cosmic Break's latency compensation in detail, I know that Cosmic Break's ranged attacks are evaluated server side, and its melee attacks evaluated client side, neither of which would be relevant to TERA. Client-side hit detection is moronic. There's really nothing more to say about that. The projectile speeds in TERA are also much much slower and last for far less time than those in Cosmic Break, which is why I expect to see fewer problems with latency in TERA than other games regardless of the solution.

But in any case, all of those things are relevant only to general latency compensation. They have absolutely nothing to do with attack speed compensation, which was the entire point of this thread. It seems like you completely missed the point.

And apparently you can't read. What of it?

Anyways, here's a nice list of things that are absolutely incorrect or idiotic, since I'm terribly bored and have nothing better to do:
>FPS games don't have attack speed problems due to latency either
>It doesn't matter what your ping is it won't affect how fast or often you can shoot
So he's played a handful of shooters and is ignoring the plethora of cases where these can, indeed, be seen. Not to mention the even greater number of MMOs where the same (firing rate) issues can be seen due to latency effects.

>Ping affects your reaction time
What in the fuck am I reading.

>You could have the client start the attack animation and skill cooldown immediately when you press the button, then cancel them if the server doesn't approve
It already does the equivalent to that without wasting time showing you that you aren't attacking, while also preventing you from wasting your cooldown (more applicable to the skills that aren't the equivalent to "auto-attack", which is what is shown in that video).

>You could let the player press the button 200ms before the skill is finished, then let the server use it as soon as it's ready.
You certainly could, yes. You might want to think about the interaction between client-side displayed cooldowns and server-side forced cooldowns and when the projectiles are first shown firing on your end, and then when they are actually allowed to fire. This is nearly identical to, and just as useless as, the next comment:

>You could let the player queue one skill in advance.
Really now. Queuing actions in an TPS? I can't even tell if your whole post was supposed to be in jest after reading this.

But anyways, feel free to post something useful yourself. Perhaps even something that touches on the very serious issue that both of you were completely ignoring, yet is inherently connected to giving the client-side more control of what's happening in the game.

So since there are crap FPS games that don't fix the problem, it can't be fixed?

>Ping affects your reaction time
>What in the fuck am I reading.
If my ping is 200ms, then things I'm seeing are 200ms out of date, thus my reactions are delayed 200ms. What the heck did you think ping was?

>You could have the client start the attack animation and skill cooldown immediately when you press the button, then cancel them if the server doesn't approve

Obviously not or there would be no attack speed problem.

This is nearly identical to, and just as useless as, the next comment:
If latency variations make the attack request arrive early, then have the server execute it soon after. It shouldn't be a difference of more than 15ms. Regardless it'll cause no more problems than plain old vanilla lag would.

>You could let the player queue one skill in advance.
>Really now. Queuing actions in an TPS? I can't even tell if your whole post was supposed to be in jest after reading this.

I have yet to see anyone give any reason why this wouldn't work. If you're making subsequent attacks, you've almost always got your target stuck in one place or right in front of you. TERA is not a game where people run around shooting each other.

>> No.7136190

either try the Korean game or ask someone that plays it how the lag is handled.

You can speculate back and forth about a million things, but the fact is that unless you have a clear picture of how the systems are interacting (especially in pve) your guesses are really only considering a general case at best. Especially since most fps, Korean, and Japanese games don't consider the case of people having ~300ms at all, and just assume people will have <100ms and do minimal work.

There is no doubt that really bad lag (say 400-500+) is going to cripple the gameplay completely. PVP is also probably going to be pretty iffy. How that affects the dungeons though can be completely different.
The fact that the collision is going to be between slow wide arcs/objects and not fast impossibly small objects (bullets) only makes the situation easier to handle.

>Especially since most fps, Korean, and Japanese games don't consider the case of people having ~300ms at all, and just assume people will have <100ms and do minimal work.

And if they do that I can guarantee TERA will flop like Aion did.

>> No.7136268

>>7136244
I can agree with that, especially if it is lacking in other areas. I also don't know what their break even point per server and capacity is.
Aion didn't flop because of lag though, so it is pretty deceptive to bring that up. It flopped because of a combination of race imbalance, pvp class imbalance, lack of content, and lolprogressisrandom bullshit, which is far worse. There are people who will stay if lag is biggest problem by far.

Anyway, the game isn't in a state that would considered 'acceptable' by the western MMO market, so I highly doubt they are going to be rushing the game out. More likely the Korean version will milk the people who bought accounts for awhile, and just terminate them all if the western version brings it up or if they cause problems to the community.

Semi auto mouse shooting trick, ping shooting to the scroll wheel make it sensitive as fuck you can shoot bullets faster then a machine gun can. How man you can shoot depends on your ping. Maybe it has to do with packets not ping but the higher the ping the slower you shoot it's obviously visible.

Also that trick with rotating the character by binding the rotation commands on smile shortcuts too was affected by this, I could make 2 spins in a second using my Logitech G15 macro on a EU server compared to not even one on a US server.

So there are the examples I know off.

The bigest problem I see with the game is you will dodge shit too late, you will miss moving shit because the attack input arrives too late it's just like playing a FPS on 200+ ping. If you're some sort of "pro" player or tourney fag forget about playing it on other continents.

I know in my days of Call of Duty 2 clan playing days I refused to play on 100ms servers, and clanwars were not played until both sides had below 100 ms ping on a server.
