Why is a flip phone so commonly depicted as being used by Japanese people? Does everyone seriously use flip phones still?

Or is it like here in America where everyone and their fucking teeny bopper sibling have an iPhone?

flip phones were basically the standard up to a few years ago (they need big screens to read novels and mail texts the size of war and peace, so that's the best solution), now though a lot of people switched over to iPhone, yeah, which is a really big problem for phone manufactorers.
