Haiti gets hit with a 7.0 earthquake in 2010 and hundreds of thousands of people die, and the country is in chaos.

Tokyo gets hit with a 8.8 earthquake 10 minutes ago, the sixth strongest every recorded in the world, and shrugs it off after issuing a tsunami warning for the eastern coast, no deaths report, quake-proof buildings still standing, power and utilities still working. NEETs didn't even have to leave their apartments or rooms.

Something like this happened in Mexico. Shortly after Haiti was completely obliterated by the earthquake, Baja California was shaken by one of roughly the same magnitude, yet not much damage was taken, because houses in Tecate are way, way better built than houses in Haiti.

Basically, the stronger your country, the stronger it is against natural disasters... and Haiti was a weak-ass shithole for an earthquake being able to completely sink it in chaos.

As a culture I'm certain everyone in Japan is aware of the dangers of Tsunamis. In fact most deaths come from people who are ignorant of the risk, or otherwise addled by the chaos of events post-quake.

I would imagine that a number of Japanese probably sought shelter on the roofs of tall buildings if they weren't able to properly evacuate. That said I'm not sure what a 8.9 Tsunami would look like... still, got to hope for the best.

Certainly not being Haiti helps (not so much the "nigger" thing, but that Japan is richer so Japanese buildings are build more solidly) but another thing is that the earthquake was quite a bit away from. This feels like when a big hurricane hits FL. I don't know for sure of course, but when we have a hurricane hit here that leaves us without power for two weeks and all this shit goes down, it's honestly not that bad at all besides the power, that part sucks. The actual hurricane is practically harmless unless you're standing outside for the entire duration, running around naked.

I realize the earthquake and tsunami are more spontaneous, but all-in-all, for you to get hurt or actually die would just mean you had a huge amount of bad luck, at the exact wrong place at the exact wrong time.

Anyone living in and around the earthquake belt are actually hardcore, destruction is only second nature to them

Unlike say, the Haitians who doesn't taste or live in fear of earthquakes, so when they got hit bad, it was like a shock similar to getting dunked in a bathtub of cold water.

Yeah, generally places that only have big earthquakes on the order of once a century don't have great building codes. It doesn't help that Haiti is dirt poor, of course.

any place that is facing the earthquake focal point is also on alert like New Zealand and Taiwan

Hi, /jp/. I live atop a hill in Oregon City Oregon (if you don't know where that is... Well, might as well say I live in Portland Oregon. That's pretty much the only thing IN Oregon) and I'd just like to say thank you Japan, for giving to us your tsunami and allowing the possibility for more people within my state to die who are not me.

Especially my bastard 'friend' who is spending the night over there with the woman I wanted to date.

You given so much to me over the years.
Many? lives were lost, but your sacrifice was well worth it.
God bless the early estimated 8 Japanese citizens that died tonight.

Thank you for the anime.. thank you for the VNs, and thank you, thank you so very much for the devestating tsunami that will be ravaging the coast over the next few hours.

Thanks for worrying.

We have a minor humanitarian crisis down here in Minato-ku, downtown Tokyo.
Even though the quake itself was minor, all the trains are basically stopped for the night, so everybody is camping out in their offices. All the convenience stores are cleared out and we've got campers in elevator lobbies. I go to school here, everybody is going to spend the night in the building it seems.

Funny thing is when I was outside when the actual quake hit I thought it was pretty awesome but no where near this serious.

Hey you're in Minato too. Yeah, the streets are a mess, probably due to all the office buildings they have, and the fact that most people come to Minato to work.

I just got home after 2 hours of walking from Waseda... passed thru Shinjuku. It's madness there.

..;. Okay, well, that maybe a hell of a lot better than other situations you could be in this particular kind of event, but that's still not really my idea of 'minor'...

Also, really?
Do you get electricity and stuff, or are you running on your laptops battery?
And if you do get electricity and whatnot...
Does anybody know of any pics of this part of the event in particular? Because that sounds incredibly interesting to me... People camping inside their offices...

>> No.7076484

>>7076236
It's going to keep rising.
First I heard it was 5. Last I had the news on it was 8. On 4chan, I then hear it.. I don't remember what exactly, but I higher number no less, then you say it's 61 now.
You can tell from the pictures.
There's going to be a lot of deaths.
There's just no way that at least hundreds wouldn't die... But then, I seriously doubt that I have a very good sense of scale for this.
