Something like this happened in Mexico. Shortly after Haiti was completely obliterated by the earthquake, Baja California was shaken by one of roughly the same magnitude, yet not much damage was taken, because houses in Tecate are way, way better built than houses in Haiti.

As a culture I'm certain everyone in Japan is aware of the dangers of Tsunamis. In fact most deaths come from people who are ignorant of the risk, or otherwise addled by the chaos of events post-quake.

I would imagine that a number of Japanese probably sought shelter on the roofs of tall buildings if they weren't able to properly evacuate. That said I'm not sure what a 8.9 Tsunami would look like... still, got to hope for the best.

I don't know for sure of course, but when we have a hurricane hit here that leaves us without power for two weeks and all this shit goes down, it's honestly not that bad at all besides the power, that part sucks. We have a minor humanitarian crisis down here in Minato-ku, downtown Tokyo.
Even though the quake itself was minor, all the trains are basically stopped for the night, so everybody is camping out in their offices. All the convenience stores are cleared out and we've got campers in elevator lobbies. I go to school here, everybody is going to spend the night in the building it seems.

Funny thing is when I was outside when the actual quake hit I thought it was pretty awesome but no where near this serious.

First I heard it was 5. Last I had the news on it was 8. On 4chan, I then hear it.. I don't remember what exactly, but I higher number no less, then you say it's 61 now.

There's going to be a lot of deaths.

Not OP but in the same area. Electricity is running. People camping in their offices because the trains are stopped, as a precaution. Buses are being pressed to service, but mainly at major stations like Shibuya, Shinjuku.
