Team Fortress doesn't that level of cultural penetration; it's not old enough. It might be popular among people currently engaged in playing video games, but to say that anyone who has ever played a PC game is aware of its existence is wholly inaccurate.

A better example of such a game would be Doom. It's old enough that it spans across multiple cohorts, and it is (in)famous enough that it is able to generate continued discussion.

Hell, even if you're wanting to restrict it to current gen games, Team Fortress doesn't have the same power behind its name as Halo or Call of Duty.
