After playing EoSD, PCB and IN, I originally got into her because she was the primary BAiJR character, and I wanted to know Gensokyo backstory because I was ass at the shooters.

Then I played PoFV and she was awesome.

Then MoF came out and she was smug and awesome.

Then SWR came out and she was awesome and got canon sizable breasts to boot

Then fanon made her really fucking hot.

Aya is truly the epitome of "everything went better than expected".

I had a tryst with Aya a year back, right around Valentine's Day. It all started with being fed chocolate. We had a lovely time together, I loved her and she loved me... but then she grew elf ears.

I don't care if they're mainstream, it's their personalities and traits that count. Though at the time I picked Mokou she wasn't that popular in comparison to many others.

However, I do particularly like several really unpopular sisters, like Medicine for being a lonely doll and because of a certain doujin called Lily of the Valley (;_;). I also like Yorihime and Toyohime for being falsely labeled "Mary Sues" by people who clearly did not understand the term and just hated them for doing their job and being competent. However, eventually all three lost some points with me because they are all racists.

OP here. of course, there's nothing wrong at all with liking a really popular character like reimu, marisa, sakuya, etc etc. i was just curious as to what makes people drawn to certain characters, popular or not.

Sakuya is the first Touhou character I took notice of and she's essentially what got me into the fandom

I also like her relationship with Remi and position in the SDM a lot.

Oh, in that case, I've got something to say.

For me, it's the potential of the character and their situations that make them so attractive to me. Keine, for instance. Strictly from canon, we know that she's pretty much subsumed Reimu's role as guardian of the humans in Gensokyo (especially because Reimu chum with youkai, and no matter how sweet the youkai, talking with somebody whom you KNOW could rip your arms off with little trouble is disconcerting.) Also, Keine was born a human, and acquired her powers at some point when she was blessed by the Hakutaku. She's also one of the few touhous who lives in town.

Now weigh that against the fact that she's still half-youkai, and many of the townsfolk are probably scared shitless of her. Add to that the fanon interpretation that her once-a-month transformation on the full moon makes her go psycho-murder-spree....

It's interesting to think about what her life must be like, no?

She is not a half-youkai, she is a were-youkai. She is only a youkai roughly 13 nights (not even full days) of the year. Rinnosuke is a half-youkai.

Akyuu says they're only just intimidated by the horns. Unlike the "YOUKAI SHOULD DIE" fanon racism, humans in Gensokyo are friends with youkai who are intelligent.

Extremely non-canon. Akyuu says she's just fine, if slightly shorter of temper (this is not because of her youkai status, but because her duties as Hakutaku forcing her to record an entire month within 12 hours).

I don't think i'm too deep into touhou to pick a definite favorite, but I'm partial to Yukari because a power metal version of her theme song got me started into investigating Touhou. and well, here i am now, 6 months later with a boatload of touhou pics, music, and obsessively playing the games.

Agreed. IIRC she's technically a "half-beast," but for all intents and purposes she's human. "Half-youkai" is just a lazy summary I use because I like to TAKE IT EASY.

Canon Ran is extremely smart (calculated the width of the Sanzu river) and powerful. And she's closely tied with Yukari and Chen who are also awesome and adorable. Plus her ears and tails are fluffy.

I guess I like her for all the different ways she can be interpreted. A smart, hard working servant, a mother to Chen, or a even a pervert streaking through Gensokyo. She's got a lot of variety.

Koakuma. I'm really not sure why, since she doesn't even have a proper name or any dialogue, but she's always been my third favorite character after Patchouli and Mokou. There's just something about her character design that's alluring, and it's a shame she was just a midboss.

well i dont know if shes mainstream or not, but basically i always enjoyed her theme and arranges of it mostly. i also loved the fact that it can be played backwards and sound almost the same forwards. it also makes sense with the whole "hartmanns" thing, psychologically. also uncontrollable mind powers and MOE.

I'd say Patchy is pretty mainstream. It's definitely her personality, her demeanor. It's so calm, and intelligent. I also think her sleepy looking eyes in most primaries are really cute.

Then again, my second favorite is definitely not too mainstream: Orin. She's really cute too, in a completely different way than Patchy. I'd say, an imouto way. She's especially cute when she's calling me Oneesan ^_^

I love Sanae for being the "normal" girl. Watching her character develop (or become corrupted) from MoF to UFO was amusing and her dialogue in Soku just made her all the more lovable.
