Actually, it's meant to show the difference in 'time' between Doc and Marty. Pre-1950 (Doc's youth), Japan's economy and manufacturing was still rather meager, so they took the economic niche that produced low-quality goods for little cost. Post-1950, Japan had recovered and built stable and powerful production means of production, and became renowned for the articulation of craftsmanship. Also, lingering effects of WW2 propaganda had an effect on public perception of Japan's goods, particularly with regards to the oft-cited Zero's materials (mostly wood and cloth in an era of steel).
