I always figured that only certain characters actually used the spellcard rules canon wise. It always seemed like that during fights like Mystia or Youmu that there was lives on the stake.

Anything can be danmaku, for one thing. Take Sakuya's knives: they do not cause cleaving damage on strike any more than Cirno's ice danmaku actually freezes the opponent. My take is that danmaku is actually a type of "label" granted to other objects that subverts their normal type of damage and replaces it with some kind that promotes spiritual/blunt force damage.

The "danmaku" label isn't perfect, though, and some of elements of the original damage seeps through. Cirno's ice danmaku can still feel a little cold, Mokou's fire danmaku can still feel a little hot, and Sakuya's knives probably distribute their blunt damage in a piercing way (blade-side).

As for Eirin and Mokou, I'd imagine even too much danmaku can hurt you. Think about how a rock, when thrown, though it can only deliver a blunt-force collision, can still crack open a skull.

I can understand people thinking into the characters personalities and what they'd do in a certain situations, etc, especially given the wealth of material available. But "rules of danmaku" can fuck right off. Danmaku is always dodgeable and uses different objects because it’s a game. It's like writing a hypothesis on why the bullets in CAVE shooters ignore perspective.
