In the illusionary world there lived a solitary dollmaker. While she wasn’t entirely devoid of friends she did spend most of her time inside her small house making dolls. And when she wasn’t making dolls she made doll-clothes, doll-shoes, tools for doll-making… When asked if she prefered the company of dolls to that of living beings she said These dolls are my precious children. My friends are my precious friends. I couldn’t possibly answer that question.

I think that's probably the least depressing answer you could expect.

In the illusionary world there lived a girl who served in large splendid manor. She had been all over the world serving the master of the household, and finally they had setteled here. When asked if she ever longed to return to her home country she said Of course I do. But this is land is still young, especially when compared to the four thousand years of Chinese history. Despite that it has treated us so well. Wouldn’t it be a pity to not see it grow?

In the illusionary world there lived a girl who tended a huge and most gorgeous garden. She was young and she was not nessesairily talented or experinced. Yet she worked hard long hours every day in the garden. When asked if she worked so hard because she loved gardening she smiled softly and said No.

In the illusionary world there lived a beautiful shinigami. She had an imposing figure but she was truly calm and kind-hearted. And despite being a shinigami she was rarely ever working seriously, and when she was she always took her sweet time. When asked if she really thought the line of work suited her she said Well, yes. I mean, the dead have already gone out of time, haven’t they?

In the illusionary world there lived an ancient god. She lived atop the highest mountain in the middle of the land. Everyday she watched over the creatures of the land go about their lives. In heaven far above the illusionary world there lived a selfish celestial. Despite bing a celestial she was just an immature little girl. When asked if she ever felt any remorse for leading this kind of lifestyle, she said nothing, because she hadn’t been listening.

In the illusionary world there lived a red and white shrine maiden. She never went out of her way to meet with others, but neither did she go out of her way to avoid them. It's real... The original idea was an idea I had for a full-length one-shot, but I used it here because I though it suited the format. I probably won't write another Youmu because I'm content with this one. But of course, anyone else is happily allowed to write another Youmu one if they want too.

In the illusionary world there lived a half-human half-youkai who lived amongst piles of junk carefully sifted and sorted and shelved. From all over the land, people stronger than him came and took whatever they pleased from him, giving only pittance in exchange. When asked how he made a profit, he said I don't. But the artifacts, they must be identified. Even a half-youkai will sicken and die if they don't use their power. And the artifacts, too, would be sad.

In the illusionary world there lived a girl who was friends with a vampire. She and the vampire didn’t have many interests in common, and their personalities were very different. Yet one could often see them during tea-time, smiling togther. When the girl was asked why she had such an unlikely friend she said The vampire promisedshe would give me everything I wished for if I promised to became her friend. I am just fulfilling my part of the bargain. Why not enjoy myself in the meantime?

In the illusionary world there there lived a half beast who loved the humans. She lived and worked in the human village protecting them, teaching them and keeping the records of their history. Argue all you want, but to be honest I'm not really that interested. Not to be rude, but it's impossible to write something every single Touhou fan would agree on anyway, and I'm a bit tired of arguing back and forth over character portrayal that and character interpretation this. I did what I felt was right when I wrote them, and that's all there is to it...

In the illusionary world there lived an Anon, reading at his computer. He read flowery stories that stirred his imagination, which helped him paint pictures in his mind that he would probably never see with his eyes. When asked why he thought these spoiler-clad stories were so intriguing, he said Because I look at them and can't help but wonder what will come next

Put in a plainer way, the spoiler tags evoke a sense of anticipation as for just a micro-second you wonder what the character says. After you're already drawn in with a vivid description of the setting, it's easier to get a tiny emotional response, and the spoiler tags serve to make that response one of wonder

I'm glad there are others who see it my way. When I used to more actively write Touhou fanfiction shorts I always got dragged into these discussions and I could never really defend myself (if needed) with anything else except saying "I did what I felt was right at the time." My own definition of the Touhous also change all the time. In a few months I might read this thread and wonder what the hell I was doing.

If it helps though, please don't think of these shorts as if they are trying to describe a whole character. What I've done in many cases is that I've taken one characteristic of one character and exaggerated it to create an effect by asking and answering a question. In some cases I really have to disregard some parts of a character's personality in order to get the right affect with such few words. Byakuren is an example where I though this was really hard, since my idea of her is very scattered, muddied and even contradictory. I didn't know what part to focus on.

Not to mention they're mostly though of as theoretical; I doubt most the girls would answer honestly when asked personal questions like this.

tl;dr: It's just fanfiction. Please just try to have fun and not think too hard.

I was posting an attampt to be humourous. this is by no mean a flamepost. You, however, turned it into a fight. Do you claim to have no will of your own, and that my poor sense of humor obliged you to response with flaming? are you that weak willed? In that case, I'll say that the lack of love from your kind is what pushing me into making those posts, so it's all your fault.
