I'm not that Anonymous, but some plants are pretty awesome. Take, for example, sandbox trees. They're also called dynamite trees, because their seed pods fucking explode, sending seed shrapnel all over the place, up to 100 meters away. Or bullhorn acacias, which lack the defensive compounds of other acacias but make up in commanding entire ant swarms. If some poor animal tries to eat any part it or even looks at the tree funny, it is beset by symbiotic ants each over an inch in size.

And then there are trees that, when their leaves are eaten by a caterpillar, can recruit wasps that prey on that particular caterpillar. No other wasp, mind you. Only the relevant wasp is called. Trees also wage wars underground. It's folk wisdom that one shouldn't plant a garden near a black walnut, the reason for that is that the tree literally poisons the soil, making it inhabitable for any other plant. It has also been demonstrated that plants know their own siblings and do not attack them, but if they find a stranger, it's fair game.

Carnivorous and protocarnivorous plants are a wholly different story, from those that literally feed on bird and shrew shit (it was assumed that one particular pitcher plant fed on insects, until they inspected the contents of the pitcher and found nothing but shrew crap.) to bladderworts that create an organic vacuum chamber to suck prey in.

Anyway, I wanted to be a biologist of the "goes around collecting animals, describes them and spews out a dozen papers every year" type. Now I'm a biologist, but not of that sort.

Unless you're somehow working with advanced geometries, you shouldn't have to know any math, really, to be a computer programmer. Math is a lie. Understand the concepts and you can fudge the math every time, or use a program to do the actual math for you. Formulas can be looked up in real life. That shit only matters on exams.

The reason none of you learn anything in college is because you believe what they're claiming to be teaching you is actually important. Go to a technical school, instead, if you care about actually learning something useful.

At least I only have one friend, and I let him live with me in my dorm room for a month when he moved to my city to study, but hadn't gotten a place to live yet.
I think I treat people fairly most of the time, but I guess that's easy when I don't get in situations where I have to make decisions that are critical to other people.
That's part of the reason I'd never want to be a boss who'd have to fire people. I'd try my best to talk them into going a bit down in pay, but telling them to come to work for 3 the next months while they'd have to look for someone else to give them a stable life would just suck.

>Universitys breed engineers and technical schools build drones

They want your money. Of course they would tell you that.

Engineering is almost completely logic and technical knowledge. Math is done as needed and with machines that do the actual calculations/formulaic application for you. As long as you know how to use the formulas or look up how to use them when you need to, the math is unimportant.

Logic is important, but that's flow and understanding of flow, not really calculation. If you're doing programming, logic and design are key, as is becoming acquainted and using the tools involved. Programming is more about what you've done and can do than what you "know from college." Now, if you're doing actual engineering, as in designing the parts, constructing them, and maintaining them (hard engineering), then you'll need to know math related to electrical work. That field is highly technical, but highly paid, more so than any grunt programmer is.

College is a money pit. All you get is a piece of paper that says you're house trained. It's business' way of weeding out the incompetent and un-trainable before having to deal with them.

College being a money pit isn't necessarily a bad thing. At least not for me since I'm not the one throwing money into the pit.

And it kinda does make sense, doesn't it?
I mean; if I was a business, I'd probably hire the guy who had gone through some training that proves he's capable of being trained further rather than some guy who's been producing stuff without actually ever had to think for himself.
At least that's what I hope the business I apply for will think when I show up with my BA in Japanese Studies.
Something like: "oh, this guy learned Japanese and random shit about the Japanese Society without killing himself in the process, so maybe we can teach him to [..]"

I have no idea what I'm doing and I fear for my future.

I'm saying if you've already dumped (I mean invested) time and money into your degree, then get the damn thing. You already have debt, might as well get the paper and prove your pedigree. With the spare time that you no doubt have not studying and being on /jp/, start teaching yourself how to actually program. Read about process and design. Try out a language that is actually used by businesses, instead of whatever bullshit they're teaching you in class. Try setting up your own network using surplus, outdated throwaway equipment. (You can buy tons of outdated, third-world throwaway networking equipment from companies that upgrade their old shit. This is why it helps to make friends with other people into computers: they know when companies are having firesales)

What you learn by your own efforts is 500 times more useful and long-lasting than the shit they shell out to you during lectures.

Long story short, you suck because you're not actually invested in what you want to do. If you were invested in it, you wouldn't take their bullshit lying down and would be exceeding their low expectations.

This is pretty much everybody on /jp/, though, so have no fear: you are amongst your own kind.

Except when you're on the bleeding edge of technology, there are no formulae to look up. You're on your own and you need the background to figure it out yourself.

Granted, most people don't have that kind of job, even university graduates. However, it's hardly the fault of their university education that they were only able to get drone jobs.

>The reason none of you learn anything in college is because you believe what they're claiming to be teaching you is actually >important. Go to a technical school, instead, if you care about actually learning something useful.

While what he's saying might be true for the "math" you learn in K-12 or even some bad colleges, I think a conceptual knowledge of stuff like discrete maths, combinatorics and theoretical CS (which is basically math) ought to be important for computer programmers who want to hone their skills, especially if you want to be a superprogrammer (which may then involve some advanced supergeometries). I'd go further than what >>6623068 says and note that even if you're nowhere near the bleeding-edge (for programmers maybe Google or Microsoft Research or something would be considered bleeding edge?) a good intuitive grasp of the maths/cs behind programming really distinguishes the good programmers from the bad, and that while these sorts "naturally" pop up the self-aware ones have discourses to communicate, practice and learn in.

>> No.6624403

>>6624309
Yes, if you want to do the most high-level, high-paying stuff it's needed. For most programmers it's not really, although it can definitely help. For 99% of jobs you won't be reinventing the wheel though, or doing any high level theorycrafting of your own.

I think most people on /jp/ will gravitate more towards the lower-to-middle tier jobs anyway. He's right when he says that overall, practical practice such as what you'd learn at a trade school is actually more useful in regards to just getting out there and collecting checks as fast as possible.

There's still a lot of leftover CS majors from the dot-com boom who went into for the money but have no real talent. Add to that all the schools who added CS programs of dubious quality. When they say it's really hard to find good people, it's no lie.

>Computer Science ... doesn't require much social interaction.
I wish people would stop spreading this pernicious bullshit. Sure, you're not glad-handing random people or giving talks in front of a crowd. You do have the particularly lousy tasks of talking to people enough to figure out what people *really* want (which often has no relation to what they tell you they wanted) and telling people what they asked for is impossible (which I've seen devolve into a shouting match). It's even harder in some way than dealing with random strangers since you have to go back to work the next day and work with the same people you just lost an argument with.

>> No.6624563

The problem with "just getting out there and collecting checks as fast as possible" is that there is a new crop of people every year with the same idea and they just got trained in the latest technology. Some of them will even have taken the time to get that advanced knowledge you don't have. As you get older, those younger people look more and more attractive to your employer. If you aren't thinking about keeping up to date to stay ahead of them, you are dead meat. And let me tell you, studying on your own is a whole hell of a lot harder when you're doing it on your own spare time without an instructor to guide you.
