After reading Higurashi again, I came to realize what a wonderful character Rena is. Story aside, the whole cast of Higurashi is just so much better than Umineko.

Can me make this a Rena thread so I can start getting my collection back?

I have to agree with that. The one thing I really thought was better in Higurashi was the characters. If I had to give a reason why, I suppose it's because they all had a very prominent part. They were fleshed out. Every character has his or her spotlight. That's not really the case in Umineko. I think Umineko just has too many characters.

You come out of Higurashi with a respect for even the side characters (Oishi is such a badass). In Umineko I can't say I really respect any character besides Battler, Beatrice, Kinzo, George, and maybe Shanon. Some of the characterization in Umineko was so badly done too, probably in large part to make the contrived mystery sort of point to an answer. Seriously, name me a worse character in Higurashi/Umineko than Ange. Yet, so much time was wasted on her.

Erika was the best thing to happen to Umineko in Chiru, but noone wants to recognize that fact in favor of mindless Yasu fapping and Beato BS.

Even just halfway through Ep 7, and her absence is tangible... Bern just doesn't have the trolling presence without Erika to bully and send into the fray. The story, while interesting, is rather dull so far.

Guess I'll cross my fingers for Episode 8.

Or maybe it's because everything about her was just terrible. How about the fact that she detoured the main plot? Maria's flashbacks made perfect sense to include in the story as they characterized both Maria and Rosa. Ange's were out of fucking nowhere and just added another unneeded character. Not to mention that her character itself is worthless. Why add another main character whose whole personality is that she's depressed from losing her family. I think all the readers would have gotten that fact without needing it shoved in our faces repeatedly. I mean, Ange single-handedly killed any entertainment value that could have been found in episode 4. She's the reason it was about as bad as episode 2 was.

Why develop Ange's character when Ryukishi could have developed Hideyoshi's? Or Kyrie's? or Eva's? Or, well, almost every other character was underdeveloped anyway. Introducing an older Ange was a slap in the face to good characterization.

Hey look someone that totally missed the point of Ange's plot.

Ange's story isn't actually about Ange, it's about Beatrice. Her story is one big fucking giant 'look at me, this is the core of the ENTIRE STORY and why everything is happening'. It even outright says in the second-to-last-chapter that Beatrice's origins are the same as hers and Maria's.

It was not 'pointless' and it was not 'about her being depressed (which she never was, btw- that was the whole point)'. It was showing that neither Maria, Ange, or Beatrice grew up unhappily, despite unhappy circumstances.

This is reinforced massively in Episode 7 with Yasu, too.

Ange also had importance for the meta setting. She gave Battler an emotional jump start, and was used to introduce the idea of 'observing' with Featherine.

I also thought the self crisis she had when talking to Lambda was really cool. It's kind of like if somebody went to Rika before the reality loop and ripped Bernkastel out of her, then telling Bern that she will never be happy as Rika.

If you're comparing her to Kumasawas's son then sure he's a worse character than Ange.

Ange may be "important" to the plot but she's still one of the most boring character in the story
