But the realization that my life was always be dull and unsatisfying already smacked me in the face, op. It's kind of WHY I take refuge in escapism. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why anyone takes refuge in escapism.

Are you implying that this isn't basically what everyone does?
Work, religion, politics, hobbies. The majority of people use these things as some form of escapism, because life is shit.
Life is about doing what you want to do right now. Not working your ass off so that one day you can afford that awesome sports car. Because you never can. In the end you just die and realize that the life you've been waiting for has passed and that you've just wasted it.
