Why can't we have a board thats open to more adult audiences to discuss interesting scholarly stuff like this. How about setting up topic boards for real sharing or collaboarative research and debate instead of posting useless pudding shit and attracting obnoxious 12 year olds? This site has had 7 years to develop and has done absolutely nothing to mature. I will use what little money I have left to register a domain name, start running a modded futaba PHP script and produce an imageboard that will actually CONTRIBUTE something to MANKIND. FUCK THIS JUVENILE SHIT.

there's no reason you can't setup a decent imageboard thats geared to a more adult audience & topics. Taking off the shitty j-list, anime/hentai and porn ads and and removing /b/ type shit would obviously help (that and having actual mods and admins over the age of, say, 25 would help)

Because 4chan is not 2ch.
You have to understand that in America and Europe social networks aren't as centralized as in Japan. In Japan there's basically no other place where to discuss stuff outside of 2ch, so everyone must converge there if they want to start a thread. On the other hand, we baka white devils enjoy the luxury of having thousands of forums to choose from depending on the extent of our expertise and maturity.
It just so happens that everyone on the Internet uses 4chan as a place where to fuck around (and sincerely I see no reason because it should be otherwise), but I bet you will find dozens of forums where to discuss history seriously if you look around.

>you will find dozens of forums where to discuss history seriously if you look around.
This. And most of them will be insular, hateful places full of violently angry aspies who happen to like history, like most internet forums dedicated to a specific topic. And there you will see the expression in reality of what you wish in theory.

you can have the occaisional serious discussion on here. I've seen threads on /r9k/ where 30+ and even 40 y.o. folks would like to discuss topics anonymously without being sandwiched in between retarded memes, camwhores, and dickgirls, as unbelievable as that may sound.

What's the one thing they have in common that was the focal point of this thread, dumbshit? Anonymous Posting. At least imageboards are at least somewhat presentable unlike the shit that is 2ch and dis.4chan.org, Nobody here uses the 4chan discussion forums again because of the shit looking interface (and the fact that its hidden from the main site by default). Surely somebody can do better than this crap.

you'd be surprised how many VIPPERS and expert programmers come to /jp/. I like the text boards because I don't have to put up anime screencap threads all day. The ones which aren't 95% spam are actually pretty decent.

/jp/ should totally get its own textboard. It's not like very many people use them anyway, hence I'd think that it would cost moot almost nothing in extra bandwidth.

>> No.6569223

>>6565113

Well, moot did branch out recently with /sci/ and /lit/, two boards that could attract mature and intelligent people.

Unfortunately, because of 4chan's demographics, and most older people only barely using the internet in contrast to our generation(s), it's basically all for naught.

I suppose we could use a history board as well. Nearly everyone has their interest piqued at one point or another by something in history, whether it be Roman technology, World War II, ancient Chinese history etc there's a place for it. On some boards like /k/, sometimes perhaps 1/4th of the posts on the front page are all mostly history-related, for example.

Our generation is getting older though. Most people who've been on 4chan since the beginning have got to be in at least their 20's now, and I bet we already have some people in their 30's. Give 4chan 5 more years or and we'll probably have a much older audience in general, while the current "newfags" will have grown up to take our places. We can only hope that the teenagers at that time will have moved on to the next internet fad and that the site hasn't gone under.

I've been here since the beginning and I've moved between boards a few times, but I don't think I'll ever leave.

How old is the average /jp/er I wonder?

I think /jp/'s average age is 23. 20s is a very good way to put it overall. Either way we are definitely older than most other boards, but not by a huge margin. /a/'s average age is either 19 or 20, I forgot. But if you think about what a big difference 3 years can make, especially for a hobby like ours, it's actually no surprise why we're so different from them.

Most of /a/ is in high school, actually. You're a couple years behind.

>> No.6569285

>>6569278

I'm going off of medians here, even if half of /a/ was of average age 17.5, if the other half was 23.5+ (there actually are a lot of mid-late 20s lurkers), that would average out to 20 overall. And there are some older people on /a/.

Although now I realize, maybe I'm just thinking about 2008 /a/ though, which is the last time I saw any kind of attempt at a census/survey. I guess it could have gotten worse recently, even though Geass Summer before that had already just brought in an influx of <18.

>> No.6569330

Um... we're on 4chan. There are other boards outside of this which do cater to more sophisticated subjects, but this site is far too popular and infested with idiots for that now. I come to 4chan these days specifically for mindnumbing reading for when I'm eating or whatever, which is kind of sad really cause it wasn't always like this. But seriously, anyone mildly intelligent made an exodus years ago. There is very little reason to be non-retarded and on 4chan nowadays.
