Consciousness is one of the most awesome illusions ever. Does it exist in the way we experience it? No amount of understanding of neuronal encodings/mappings will be able to explain it, even if we had a full simulation of the entire brain. Behaviorally and cognitively it makes sense why we think it's continous and all that, but the fact that we think the "experience" exists and it does exist (it can only be proven from one's perspective, as you can't prove I have such an experience, but you can internally prove you have it). It's either the greatest illusion of all time, or just some mechanics of the universe we'll probably never be able to completly understand (what it is like to be `something').

As for death, I'd imagine it'd be like losing consciousness and never waking up. However, if I want to engage in wishful thinking, I could imagine some sort of cosmic consciousness, however that's only wishful thinking, my practical expectations don't go over the "losing consciouss forever" part, however I wish it would be more than that. Maybe if it makes someone feel better, they could imagine going to sleep each time as a form of death: can you really be sure to wake up with the same conscioussness and qualia each time? How is deep sleep different from going through a matter teleporter (destruction of original body and restoring the exact quantum state)?

Most of the cells in your body have completely replaced themselves several times over. Your neurons are constantly rewiring or renewing themselves as you go to sleep. Only the insula and perhaps the hippocampus really gives us any sense of self, yet this self is constantly changing despite us not being aware of this. You are not the same person you were 6 years ago, much less 6 months or even 6 weeks. You simply retain the memories of the state that consituted that person at one point in time. And most memories fade to take in new ones.

I realize that, hence why I like to think of myself as just the change of electrical patterns within the brain. I also consider deep sleep not too dissimilar to temporary death and reboot from memories (not entirely, as the brain is always active to some limited degree during sleep).

An interesting thought experiment would be asking yourself if there is any difference between the physical process that forms the mind or a simulation (for example, digital one) of the brain (disregarding performance issues which make this unpractical today, but maybe not as much in the future).
