Can you notice your own hunger, thirst, coldness? Of course. Could these sensations be suppressed with future brain stimulation technology? Sure. What kind of moron would choose to do that? The ones who'll die. The rest of us will choose to stay alive.

Right now, we have MMO players in Korea who play until they die. They are a minority. Games and operating systems can have fatigue warning alarms built in (and they do).

It requires funding to get on the shelves. Generally, you don't get funds unless your product is intrinsically related to oil. Which is why we don't have viable electric cars. That and oil companies just buying out electric car projects and scrapping them.

Too bad it doesn't specify exactly what kind of model its software uses, nor does is specify what sensors is it equiped with (and what kind of resolution). I think a lot of interesting results will lie in designing a robot with a very wide variety of sensors (human-like ones would be a good start) and a good human-like model of the mind(brain). There's quite a few interesting classical ones, but they're underfunded (albeit still progressing steadily), and a few more ambitious ones which are more close to how the neocortex works, however they're mostly focused on cognition (pattern recognition and memory) with less work being done with relation to motor control, attention and default behaviours (which aren't just hard-wired in the software's training code). A real breakthrough would be getting such a machine to be able to use human languages (without the use of NLP, but instead general intellicence algorithms), however to do that, you'll need to teach it somehow. Real-world interactive teaching seems like a much better solution than unsupervived learning, or the limited supervised learning that some people use (of course, a good model of human-like cognition is needed for such an AI to be built, but people are getting pretty close these days). The future will lie in a good integration of these technologies, however the two domains tend to progress mostly in parallel, and there's not that much work done into integration, supposedly due to lack of funds and time.

Why would it be illegal? Aren't there full-sized sillicon sex toys (I can't remember if they had a specific name) illegal? They would just be obscene if displayed in public places naked. The real reason I could imagine it being illegal would be if such a thing was designed with a real conscious which was pretty much identical in age to that of a child and would have the same thought processes, and such conscious being would be deemed to have rights similar to humans, however I don't see why would anyone even be interested in building exactly that, not to mention the sheer (present) difficulty in doing so.
