So why exactly is Touhou so incredibly popular? I can see it having a small cult of fans like a game such as disgaea, but it's way bigger. I tried playing the game for a little and it just reminded me of Ikaruga, then there's flashes of touhou like a stupid thing playing the piano, and it makes me wonder, is this even fucking relevant?

It's a fun game series with likeable characters and an enjoyable setting, and it has a lot of fun stories revolving around it, be they fanwork or official (and there is quite a bit of official Touhou work, including an ongoing manga and 4koma).

Also, I think part of it is that it's quite unique. The characters aren't, for the most part, stock manga / anime characters.

We have...

- A lazy and easily annoyed shrine maiden
- A witch with an incredibly brazen personality
- Her tsundere magic-wielding doll otaku neighbor
- A 500-year-old vampire with frightening power who looks and acts like a bratty little girl
- Her loyal time-stopping, knife-throwing maid
- Their asthsmatic wizard librarian
- A ditzy genius ghost with an immense apatite and quirky sense of humor
- Her clueless and way-too-tightly-wound gardener
- A do-nothing moon princess

Still, Touhou has nothing on Ikaruga.
You can say it managed to blow fresh air into a dying (at least here in the West) genre and gave him significant help in putting back the limelight on it so that a broader audience could be introduced to it, cool, but that's just about it.

Not the OP, but I've played through all the games so far, and I love the music, especially all of IOSYS's remixes, I've been occasionally downloading pics of Touhou characters here on /jp/. But I'm still not as obsessed as it seems most of you are.

Is it the doujins? Cuz I see no real story and character development in the games. :\
