Otaku culture used to be sub-culture, but now Otaku culture is the main culture. Watching animes doesn't make you otaku these days. If you want to be accepted as an otaku, then you have to go to comicket, or at least you have to buy doujin mangas.

So your image is K-ON, right? Watching a casual anime, such as K-ON, Lucky Star, and Haruhi, doesn't make you a hardcore otaku. It's very normal among younger generation here.
