The version of the game I downloaded isn't a .iso, it's one that somebody has already installed and just rar'd up, so the installer doesn't recognise it.

Change locale to Japanese and install the game
then get the installer-free English patch

Just copy it anywhere then, cd into the folder and …

That should work. If it doesn't, the installation you downloaded is corrupt.
