Since /jp/ likes dem Touhous so much, can we discuss a bit about the oldest ones?

Yesterday, after trying for like the tenth time (stopped playing for a long time due to college) I finally 1CC'd Story of Eastern Wonderland

Sure.
Personally I love the PC-98 games because they have a "magical" atmosphere about them. Marisa was just a witch, reimu just had her shrine, they didn't go through households or forests, just through dimentions like Makai and Mugenkan.
Also the lack of spellcards made the fights more ``wild" and less game like.

OP here. Retro gamer fag so I can definitely tell you that PC98 games are definitely NOT 8-bit.

Also of the about 70 tracks of the early era only 12~15 of them are really good with these instruments. The rest would most likely benefit from remixes.

The gameplay is the only thing that really matters, no? I don't really pay too much attention to playable characters unless they actually play very differently; most of the changes just seem to be aesthetics.

Though I understand the desire to introduce the original cast to people. Even though it's just Rika and Meira (and some rocks)

However from a gameplay perspective I find it an improvement, as SoEW was the only Touhou game I never bothered beating.
