"What do dry leaves do?"
"Huh?"
"I mean, do they 'rustle' or do they 'crinkle'?"

She stares at her younger sister, trying to communicate with her face what she really thinks about such a question. If she could voice it, it would be something like "What a waste of time, it's so like you to wonder such a thing."

Her sister understands and looks away. "Sorry..."

Struck now with a pang of guilt for overreacting to what was truly just an innocent question, she reaches her hand. "Come on, I'm just thinking about it."
She realizes now. What do dry leaves do anyway? But now would be a bad time to admit ignorance.

Kicking a few leaves on the forest floor, letting them fly and fall slowly down, she thinks about it. After a while, her thoughts are interrupted by a hesitant voice.

"Maybe it's both."
"?"
"They rustle when you walk like this:" she illustrates by walking a bit, moving the whole tapestry of dead leaves that extended under the forest, covering all the eye could see. "And they crinkle when you walk like this:" once again she shows the action she meant. It's practically the same walk, but now you can sort of hear the soft noise of leaves fragmenting and leaving parts of them stuck to the bare soles of her feet.

"...That's the same"
"No it isn't" she pouts.

She can't bring herself to admit it, but once again her younger sister had shown her how the world really was. Her feelings of humiliation and inferiority where replaced quickly enough by a sense of pride. Proud that her little sister was so good, even better than she was.

"I guess you could be right" she dropped as she kept walking more fast now, the leaves under her feet crinkling. She didn't need to see, her back felt it. Her sister was smiling now.
