They were like that in the movies. See the whole Space Nazi shtick the Empire has going, complete with hating on Chewbacca for being an alien. I admit that the EU people ramp it up a notch, though.

But Lucas didn't just stop there. He used footage from WWII dogfights for the starfighters. And he copied the idea of 'Trench Running' from a WWII flick called "The Dam Busters". There are lots of WWII tones in the original trilogy.

The prequels had, due to their modern nature, a War on Terror subplot, with heavy American Civil War tones. For example, the Trade (con)Federation fighting the Galactic (Union) Republic. The clone army's fast-roping tactics from gunships that are obviously futuristic helicopters, and fireteam-based maneuvers combined with Close Air Support mimic the doctrine the United States used in the Middle East.

It's very strange to see WWII infantry rush warfare being used in the future for SW, while modern mobilized warfare is fought in the PAST. Not that I'm giving a shit - trench warfare is brilliant. Just ask anyone who participated in the fun times known as WWI.
