What does /jp/ think about fan translators in general?

We don't have anime threads much so we don't usually talk about fansubs, but for the most part, I think pretty much all fansubbers are shitty attention whores. I can't see any other reason why they'd do what they do. Personally, I know Japanese and work as a translator so I don't watch fansubbed anime, only raw, but I know that fansubbers put flashy intros on everything including credits with their screen names, handles, whatnot, to make sure that EVERYONE in the fandom knows exactly how they went to all the trouble of subbing some anime, and to make sure that the fandom gives said fansubbers due attention for their efforts. They don't get paid for their work, and as a professional translator I can't imagine that there are that many people out there who would want to do this for free... unless we're talking about attention whores. People say they're doing it "for the fandom" or whatever, but if they were doing it for the fandom they shouldn't have to plaster their names all over everything they produce...

On /jp/ there seems to be a movement to split up individual game translation projects among a large group of anonymous translators, which to me, seems far closer to the notion of "doing it for the fandom's sake" than most anime fansubbing does.

Everyone does something for compensation. Nobody does things just out of the goodness of their heart. You do something for money, attention, or the feeling of superiority and self-satisfaction you get from it. You must be a teenager if this universal truth still eludes you.

I kind of like the TLWiki and Bakatsuki style of translation, but it doesn't really work for anime fansubs which pretty much run on a schedule.

Of course. But personally I feel that doing something for the "feeling of superiority and self-satisfaction you get from it" is better, for me at least, than doing something for attention.

Mainly, I think it comes down to the fact that people like me don't really want attention in the first place, at least not attention that can be tied directly to us. When I make original content of some kind, I'm happy if the content I created gets popular, but I have no desire to attach my name to it.

I guess I just can't understand why there aren't more people out there who think that way.

Yes, the majority of fansub groups most likely do it for the attention; what's the big deal? In the end, we get what we want, and they get what they want. A fair transaction. No use in complaining about it.

Feeling superior and getting an ego that people "need you" is not really any better than just flat out wanting attention if you ask me. That's what I mean by self-satisfaction, an ego. Not the intrinsic reward of just knowing you did a job well done. That doesn't really exist.

And yes, just because you have self-confidence issues and don't like getting credit for your work does not mean that is the normal viewpoint or should be the normal viewpoint. In the real world people put their names on things and receive credit for the things they do. That's how the world turns. If you can't understand that it's an issue on your end, not the world's end.
