Either start from a relative beginning with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. It is one of the more difficult of the games, but you'll find Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night easier if you do start there

I just happened to start with PCB, and I'm glad I did; I think it's the best to start with. EoSD is too hard, and IN is just... stupid. And I think starting later on in the series would be sort of weird.

The only hard part about IN is stage 4, especially Marisa.

Shit should be an extra stage or something, I end up bombing though her, and go on to capture all of Reisen's and most of Eirin's spells.

I started with EoSD because I heard it was meant to be harder, so completing that made PCB, IN and MoF easier. It did fuck all to help me beat SA though.

This is all in normal mode btw, I haven't tried playing harder than normal but I have cleared all EX stages, I can't really say if starting on EoSD helped me with that though.
