You can easily interpret her actions as her naturally being a gigantic bitch and she just got her lucky break when Bern decided to use her.

Or you can see her character as more pitiable, and she does most of the shit she does because otherwise Bern would make her life a living hell. Plus, she's at least half-crazy, what with the whole cheating boyfriend (who may or may not have been cheating) deal.

Erika is essentially Rosa.
She's the lowest on the pecking order, who scrambles for any attempt at praise or recognition she gets, and her hatred for magic is born out of a hatred for people who delude themselves in the fictional, like Maria and her imaginary friends.

Yet despite it all, she'll still hopes for acceptance from the person who mistreats her the most, provided that she does everything she's meant to. Like win over Battler or settle her former partner's debts.
