Oh yeah remember how in some anime, sword wielding characters can create these "air slash waves" or whatever you call them that look a bit like boomerangs. Those things could change direction and angle while flying towards the target. This is probably what happened.

Well, projectiles don't necessary go in a straight line. There are wind resistance and what-not at work, so it could be explained that way. Then again, some artists have no sense of physic in the first place.
