I've come to /jp/ for some advice on where/how to get/install MUGEN. Normally, I would try to ask /v/, but, you know... /v/ and videogames... anyways, I'm hoping this isn't too off-topic considering the EFZ/Hisoutentoku/MB posts, etc.

MUGEN seems like a lot of fun, and I became particularly interested after seeing various MUGEN videos posted here on /jp/ with characters such as Beatrice. I've been trying to figure out how to use/install MUGEN, but it seems like there are many different versions/downloads of MUGEN to the point where a Google search confuses me more! I can't find a definitive resource/hub for MUGEN downloads and information, so could someone point me in the correct direction as to what exactly I should be downloading and installing?

Sorry if I'm just being an autistic idiot here I usually try not to have so much trouble with simple things

You don't have to be a jerk that, you know; if you maybe took a minute to explain what was so worthless about MUGEN that it deserved your contempt then I'm sure I, along with the people reading this thread that might not know of MUGEN, to never bother /jp/ with it again

Sure I'll help you out.

Start off with downloading MUGEN;
http://www.elecbyte.com/downloads

This version is the most dependable and frequently updated version out there by far, and it is compatible with a host of other MUGEN characters and files.

Simply downland release 8 and we'll be on our way.

Headsup, most people hate MUGEN because it's rather hard to get into as you've experienced, and even harder to make your own characters. People assume it will be just as simple as popping Street Fighter in their console and click "quick-match online".
In other words, the haters are simply casuals that cant focus their attention on something for more then 10 minutes.

I'm afraid this will come across as rather typical, but there are far too much good MUGEN content for me to make a reasonable list of "must haves", just my favourite rooster has about 101 characters in it. (Though I only use about 40 character in that rooster for online play.)

My recommendation is that you search the different MUGEN forums and start downloading their community "packs", game/creator collections and similar files. And simply go from there.
Your ultimate goal should be to have a perfect "rooster" of characters that you feel are must-haves. This of course takes quite a while but is quite rewarding . .

If you're into making characters I'd recommend polishing up your studio skills and also download 'Fighter Factory'. A program that will greatly assists you finalizing your fighter.

Hope I'm helping at least a bit. If you have any more questions be sure to ask.

Though most of the times the "installing" procedure as stickied somewhere on the boards. Or you'll get the information included into the zip file.

There's a whole wiki on it, it has links to the TWO DOZEN or so sites that solely make tuhou related characters and backgrounds.

Between the sites, there are easily over fifty different alterations and styles of said characters.
http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/M.U.G.E.N

I forgot to mention this earlier in my other post;
Another reason why people hate on M.U.G.E.N is because of the bigness of it. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of people all around the world modding on MUGEN on a weekly or monthly basis. And they've been doing it for years. Making for an abundance of content, which obviously makes finding anything quite the chore as you stumble through Chinese, Korean and Russian websites to find that ONE character made by just that ONE contributor.
On the upside increases the chances of you coming across those hidden MUGEN gems that are scattered around the internet . .

Helpful MUGEN guy here.

>>5703500
Sadly, there's no ONE site that has all MUGEN characters. I'd recommend giving google a spin. Write in MUGEN, and your character of choice and go hunting.
Note that not all character files are compatible with all MUGEN clients, so don't blindly go downloading every file you see. Read up on the related file beforehand.
As stated in this very thread earlier, MUGEN is -NOT- a pick up and go program. Unless you're up for browsing MUGEN forums, fiddling around with MUGEN settings and asking for advice , you might as well do something else.

>>5703664
A quick google search would tell you that people use third party programs all the time to play with each other online. One of the (many) ways to play MUGEN with a friend over the net is to use 'Team Viewer'. Basically the program simulates that you're both on the same computer.

How do I change the key configuration? When I change it through the ingame menu, the changes don't save themselves (they reset after I restart MUGEN); I looked in mugen.cfg, but I'm not sure what numerical value corresponds to what key. (I looked up ASCII values and I don't think those were right)

it's a pain having to reconfigure my keys every time I start MUGEN

>> No.5705043

>>5704514
You're having no problem changing the keys when you are ingame.
But somehow the key bindings doesn't 'stick' when you exit the program?

When your close your MUGEN client, does it sometimes crash or freeze up?
Is the MUGEN cfg files set on read only?

>Can MUGEN get serious
It can if you want.
It depends on what characters you use (and what tiers you list them as)
There are plenty of people who try to follow certain standards, and characters made by the same people and/or groups are usually quite evenly balanced.

Just avoid installing the ones that are clearly just made to be broken.

Only worth it if you really lack access to the proper games and just want a universal platform to somewhat play.
