I've never played the VN, but my brother watches the anime. I've kind of wondered what the VN is like just for that reason

How does the anime compare to the VN? My first instinct is that the VN would be better purely because of adaption decay, but I guess I might as well ask here to find out for sure

the anime will feel like one girls drama after another because it goes through all the girl's stories.

the VN, you pick choices and yo will end up with her route, finish her story, game is over. so in that way the anime feels pretty forced.

Some routes were adapted well. Misae and Fuuko's come to mind. Several were not. Yukine's was slaughtered, and Ryou/Kyou's were completely bypassed in the main episodes.

After Story is a push, I'd say.

"Clannad is life." The game is a masterpiece (except Kappei) but Kyou's route wasn't all that great. She's still a great character though, even more so in Afterstory.

S2 of the anime series was okay (it did have some really great faithful scenes from the game), S1 was not at all.

It was great but some routes were kinda subpar and it'd have been better to omit a few of those instead. I can even imagine some people dropping it before even reaching the afterstory if they somehow manage to complete the meh routes first.
Still in my top10 though, probably my favorite nakige.

If the game ended without the stupid reviving thing, I probably would have enjoyed it more.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy it because I definitely did. That first scene in the Afterstory anime made me tear up like a bitch. So beautiful ;_;

It was quite an experience.
Personally I really, really loved Kotomi's route.
People always think about DRAMA and all when they think about Key but personally that's what I think of when I think about Clannad, rather I remember the great comedy and all the beautiful heartwarming scenes.
The "soap opera" kind of drama only had a very small part in it.
