Contrary to fan-generated belief, there is no big break between the PC-98 and Windows games. Just a couple of things happened....

1: ZUN stopped making games for a while; I think he was 21 when Mystic Square was published and then he took more time off before the next game than was taken to make all the PC-98 games put together.

2: During the years between games, his art style changed and this was reflected in the character design. Reimu went from being a generic miko to becoming what looks more like an original design.

3: Only minor characters were carried over, making it feel more like a new series was started instead of the old series continuing. But some still did carry over, and Makai reappears in TH12.

Mima will be back, I can feel it in my bones.

I went back and played though HRtP. I saw it played like absolute shit and wasn't even related to normal danmaku games so I decided to skip ahead and tried LLS. This one was an actual Touhou but it was still shit compared to the Windows games so I uninstalled it and went back to a real game, like EoSD.

One important thing to note about the PC-98 is that it was originally intended as a simple business machine and its hardware capabilities were very small.

Developing games took a lot of creativity in design, especially ZUN's work.

At no point did I say the game is bad because I can't beat it. I did say the game is bad and I did say I didn't beat it, but I never put the two together.

The game is bad for multiple reasons, mostly design flaws that have been thankfully fixed in the Windows games and also because of how many features it lacks when compared to today's shmups. There is no reason whatsoever to ever go back to the PC98 games.

I think people who get frustrated with Touhou games should just invoke the Google and find infinite lives hacks. Then you can just kick back and enjoy the virtual acid trip, you'll even build skill over time as long as you put a tiny bit of effort into it.

Are you serious? The games give you 25 lives. If you can't beat 6 or 7 stages with that, you're pretty bad. The games pretty much give you free lives too, if you beat a boss's "red health" without using a bomb or dying.

Hell, I started playing touhou games like 4 days ago and I lost a continue on the second stage. Now I can make it to the last stage and only lose a continue on the final boss.
