Everytime I see Mokou in Doujins she is depicted kind of tomboy-ish. Maybe not a super dyke, but definately more manly than other Touhous.

Why is that? If it is something from the game then since I've only played the English patched version, I couldn't really tell which part of her dialogue made her seem manly. Maybe something got lost in the translation.
Could some Japanese speaking anons confirm this? I mean was she all like 'boku' this 'boku' that in the original Japanese dialogues or was she trash-talking gangsta style to give doujin artists this idea of her being manly?

Mainly because she wears pants. It's not very "manly" but when every other girl in the series wears a skirt or a dress, it makes her very distinct.

However, I remember reading that Mokou might wear pants as a status symbol. For Gensokyo's time period, making pants is actually harder and more expensive then making a skirt or something.

Mokou is from some noble house or something.

Anyway, it's not just that. It's more that, yes, even if skirts are worn as part of a uniform on ships they just make no sense. The wind is really strong and if you're gonna wear shorts under your skirts to prevent upskirts anyway, you may as well ditch the skirt.
Shorts like these, however, are both girly and serve their purpose. Perfect!

About the reason for the skirt though, I don't think it's only about the fear for up-skirt, but because the strong wind would tussle it around and it would be dangerous in case it got stuck in something. Like an anchor.

I thought Mokou's pants were a sign of nobility, since they were so rare back in ancient Japan. I think I remember reading something along those lines.

Regardless, the tomboy thing seems to be an impact the design has had on our impressions of her. Like the way she has her hands in her pockets like many of us would associate with an aloof/"cool" person.

I mist disagree. Just look at the lines near her crotch. Those hint that if these are not a pair of shorts then that skirt must be tucked pretty far in between her legs, and that does not happen very easily even if the skirt is very wide.

Alternatively: ZUN messed up at the interview and forgot that in one case out of 50 Touhous do not wear skirts.
