Touhou's incomplete timeline v1.1

ZUN said that our human mortality is the result of our impure Earth. A sage who wanted to live forever started a 'pure' civilization on the moon that allowed its inhabitants to live forever (under the condition that they stayed pure) [1].

The sage feared an invasion from the (ever advancing) humans that he left behind on Earth. In order to keep said humans in check, the Lunarians invented youkai -- with the sole purpose of making the Earth more impure [2]. As time went on brave humans were sent out to exterminate youkai resulting in the advent of the Hakurei barrier. As the times changed, Earth was no longer a suitable habitat for lower level youkai. A youkai named Yukari became concerned with the humans' ever advancing influence and decided to create a world for youkai in a region known as Gensokyo [3].

In an attempt to increase the quality of life in Gensokyo, Yukari cooked up a plan to secure the Lunarians' paramount invention that granted them a limitless supply of energy. The plan ended in failure because there weren't enough strong youkai back in those times [4]. Yukari would later go on to breakdown the boundaries between humans and youkai. For reasons yet to be specified [5].

I was watching Kamichu the other day and I just realized how pure Nippon is compared to us westerners. The scene where the loli main character falls asleep on the floor, really showed how different our cultures are. You could never do that in a western home, lest you want to sleep in dog poop. Is it a coincidence that the Nipponese have the longest lifespan? Maybe the book of Genesis and ZUN have something going with this purity nonsense.

If you think about it, Earth is relatively beautiful compared to 99.9% of the stuff we've observed in outer space. Planets such as Earth are very rare, as opposed to the lifeless planets we see everywhere in space. But if you think about it, we cant appreciate the Earth because we're on it. But from the frame of reference from (say) a person on the moon, they can see the Earth's true beauty. As such, a civilization on the moon would be more appreciative of what they have. Touhou is deep. I just got done watching Now and Then, Here and There, Char's Counter Attack, AND Evangelion 2.2 so excuse me for my drunken rambling.

I'm not sure I'd call Eirin human. The guy who founded the Lunar Capital was Tsukuyomi, which would probably make her some sort of god. There was a nice chart Nanashi-san put together a while back that suggests Eirin is an Omoikane template. Or perhaps she's just the ruler of the FURUFURU FURU MUUUUUUN

This is wrong. Youkai always existed. Lunarians created first vampires to keep humanity in check.

There is a reason why it was mentioned in Scarlet Team's scenario. And we know there are some connections between Eirin and Sakuya.

I believe the OP was implying Yukari is in one way or another bringing youkai and humans (shrine maidens) together. The reasons are as follows:
-To make humans and youkai get along together in harmony.
-Use the shrine maidens as biological weapons for managing the Hakurei border.
-Or CoLA's speculation: "Getting to the point, aside from the primary meaning of borders, Yukari Yakumo's name also has the hidden meaning of 'A strong fortress to keep the gods trapped inside'. Now, if you substitute shrine maidens for the gods, it's obviously Gensokyo. Yukari will never let the shrine maidens escape from Gensokyo."

One thing is for certain, Eirin is NOT a Lunarian. She was born on Earth and predated the Lunar Capital's existence. But then again, Lunarians are technically still humans. They're just a different race of humans who evolved differently. Their longevity is the rusult of them living on the moon.

PMiSS also suggest Eirin's a human:

This just reminds me of those Yukari v Yuuka debates when Suigin would reference Shinki's ability to create Makai. According to PMiSS, Gensokyo is a 'world' that was created by Yukari. (Albeit, an illusion world of fantasy/imagination.) You apparently don't need the Ultimate Magic™ to create worlds in the Touhouverse. I just wonder why Eirin felt the need to take refuge in Gensokyo. You'd think with all of her knowledge she would have been able to create her own realm to hide from the Lunar emissaries.

As to avoid confusion I shall reiterate. Yukari created a world in a region that was formerly known as Gensokyo. Full reference is here:

So far ZUN has mentioned 3 sages: Eirin, Lord Tsukuyomi, and Yukari. Eirin is the sage of the moon and Yukari is the sage who cooked up the plan to create a realm within Gensokyo--in order to prevent the youkais from going extinct. Yukari is also the one who thought of the spellcard duels:

According to this article, everything that happens in Gensokyo is for show. Humans have agreed to do mock battles in order to keep the youkai from going extinct. Let me elaborate, youkai only exist for certain reasons. If said reasons stop existing the youkai will stop existing.
