Burai's evasion is awesome against medium. Give him wing or badge for type advantage and you get nice close-combatant with high counter and 60+ evade.

Erika might be better for the first playthrough since getting to Nationals might be hard, but Kendo twins are actually useful later so are better on second playthrough and on.

Kinako becomes death incarnate once you get her stars, she can blast all short (and ranged if you get some counter) characters to hell and back. She dies easily, though, so watch it. Burai on the other hand hits for about medium damage, but dodges a ton and has a good counter rate.

Kinako also gives you one of the best items in the game for free so you don't need to spend 2,000 BP and a turn getting it. She's also a lot easier to clear than Burai and you need her to clear the blue Mouri.
