Obviously because they take it more seriously. American arcades are practically dead. I have to travel several hours just to find an arcade that isn't more than 10 years old.

It's not a matter of seriousness as having the ability to get to good competition all the time pretty much. And it's also extremely easy to get to other regions to get non-local competition.

I live in Europe, and I've seen 3 arcades in my entire life.
One was completely empty, other one had only some skinhead yelling and drinking, so I didn't even dare to go in, and the third one had three kids playing inside. We played Metal Slug a bit until skinheads came in, took our money and chased us off.
Internet is the only safe place to play vidyas with strangers nowadays.

wonderboy, street fighter II, KoF98, raiden, that simpson's game, MvC, a few racing games and like five different versions of pacman and tetris
if you are lucky you can find one with House of the Dead and Pump in them

French here too, just went to the arcades today for the first time in shitload of time.
It was full of suspicious guys just hanging around and not playing anything (one even tried to get money from me), and some fat girls playing DDR.

I went home and played 3.3 on my computer instead.
