Why are all KEY protagonists have this smug sarcastic attitude about them? Okazaki Tomoya is one of the many examples. It's like all the males around him hate him because he's an asshole, while all the women around him are too stupid to understand that he is an asshole.

So being the players all KEY protagonists are, does sarcasm and being an asshole in a smartass way wins womens hearts?

I don't know, but I find them a lot more charming and likable than the faggy "nice guy" protagonist that often plagues eroge, and also the insane murderers/rapists like Rance and Fuminori. Key protags are a happy medium between those two.

What about Riki from Little Busters? Though he's definitely the exception. The protagonist from One and Yuuichi were both annoying jokesters, Yukito and Okazaki are angsty loners and the new protagonist from Rewrite has been described as arrogant.

Okazaki is one of my favorite protags. He came to life a lot more in the anime though, Yuuichi Nakamura probably helped a lot there. Someone needs to make a Clannad port with full Okazaki voice acting.

It's much easier to write protagonists who just answer with wits and sarcasm while watching everything like it doesn't matter to them, than write protagonists who actually have a well rounded personality, interact with other characters and partecipate in discussions actively instead of just expressing comments like they were on a forum.
But it's not really Key's problem, most VNs' mcs are like that.
