Do it like Persona.

You have an outside life then you have the dungeons or whatever.

Just switch out the dungeons for shmup stages. Before the start of the stage you get to choose a girl. You can only play as a girl you've established a social link with.

The higher the social link the stronger the girl becomes. She'll get better movement,shield,life,stronger spellcards,more bombs or whatever.

Most games have around 5 routes, though. Even if there are only 3 routes, at least have more than 3-5 characters. You can have the main routes, but for, say, Nitori's, you interact a lot with several other characters that know her well like Suwako, Momiji, and Aya.. They don't get their own route, but they support the main one.

That was the plan. That is at least part of the reason I picked those characters. You get exposed to a wide variety of Touhous from various games.

Also, it may just because I like Nitori's character the best (romancing a shy kappa just seems really cute), but I really don't like the choice in characters. Youmu has little interaction with anyone other than Yuyuko, and she seems kind of aggressive. Sakuya has the similar problem in that she's supposed to be the perfect maid and completely devoted to her mistress. China would be a good alternative for Sakuya, but I would rather see Youmu gotten rid of completely. Maybe replace her with Youkai Jesus or something.

You already covered the "doesn't interact well with others" type with the kappa. Nitori fucking runs away from humans the minute she sees them. That's kind of a big hurdle to go over, as the first time you meet her you'd probably scare her off with nothing but a greeting and would have to go through various channels to interact with her directly.

Meiling is the friendly-but-unlucky type, if canon > fanon in this case. I don't like the idea of a lazy doorguard as opposed to the watchful gatekeeper who tries her best but still fails. Her route would involve upping her confidence so that she can actually do her job and not get scolded so often. Again, lots of character exposure from various people trying to break into the mansion.

As far as Byakuren is concerned, just by her NATURE you would get a lot of exposure to the other characters. You'd most likely go around and helping her do stuff for other youkai to build her trust as a friend to all youkai, just like she is...although (once again), you'd have to go through lots of channels to get to her...primarily Captain Murasa.
