I don't really get this, so just so I understand: everyone in Gensokyo from Yamaxanadu to Flandre Scarlet reeling in the basement is bound by an honor system to only fight by shooting wide and slow moving bullet arrays?

Besides the fact that I can name plenty of spellcards that seem to contradict this, I really just want to get it straight. The meaning of "danmaku" to the characters really confuses the hell out of me.

I'm only asking because it often seems to go without saying that the characters are familiar with what "danmaku" is, and that it has rules and regulations to boot. I think the guy I quoted heavily implies this.

Yeah, that was really all I was clarifying. I just always thought it was weird how, at least in the fandom, the game mechanics are referenced directly in character dialog as if they were second nature to pretty much everyone. There's no formal explanation for a lot of things that go on in-game (lives, for example, and grazing), but there is a formal explanation for something as simple as the characters shooting shit at each other.

I can understand why like, Reimu and Marissa would want to fight without killing each other, but why would someone like Flandre agree to the rules of nonlethal combat?

Hell, I find it hard to believe any of the more ambitious characters would bother with formalities when their investments are threatened.

In any case, I can accept this. It still doesn't really make sense as far as I'm concerned, but to argue any more about motives, logic, and philosophy would be thinking far too much into something that was probably meant as little more than a clever flourish to give context to the game rules.
