How much can you tell me about other danmaku games besides Touhou, /jp/?

So far I haven't strayed away from the Touhou series, but I'm starting to look at other companies like Cave and Treasure. I was thinking of starting with Espgaluda 2 for the 360 (a friend of mine recommended it), how good is it?

To be honest, OP. I keep coming back to touhou because I can play at a steady pace. The others, well, same bullets and dodge asap like lightning, turned me off.

Unless you're talking about Kamui, which I loved to bits.
It's more of a fun shooter than danmaku though.

No, seriously. It is PHYSICALLY impossible to no-miss/no-bomb CAVE true last bosses.

I have tried several, and pretty much hated them all. Usually in them what passes for a pattern is "I'll spam million purple bullets at the speed of sound, then a million red bullets at the speed of sound".

I guess touhou series spoiled me, but I just can't appreciate a curtain fire game where the attacks aren't pretty and flowery.

>> No.4943494

Deathbombing is present in every touhou game. It's just that in most of them the timing is so strict that you practically have to be already pressing the bomb button BEFORE you die to make it. In Imperishable Night the timing is forgiving enough so that people can actually use the deathbombs (and in the case of the Border Team, so forgiving that it becomes strange to ever miss a deathbomb).

As for the 360 Cave ports: Futari > Espgaluda 2. Futari (and the first Mushi for that matter) feature three entirely different modes/difficulties for each version. Espgaluda 2 feels VERY gimmicky compared to Futari. It makes for a pretty deep scoring system but in my expert and professional opinion it feels like too much stuff and it ends up just being incredibly complicated. That's not to say that I don't understand it, I just don't like it. The arrange modes of both games are shit.

And as for the different modes, Original and Maniac are pretty accessible to beginners (relatively), and if you want a good challenge there's God mode, which I think is by far the best mode. If you're suicidal and/or stupid, you can try Ultra, but that shit is just a 20 lb box of rape, avoid at all costs. On the other hand, Espgaluda 2 comes in only one flavor, hard (not ultra rape, but pretty hard). Esp 2 black label is even more gimmicky than the arcade mode, but it's pretty nifty I guess.

As for music/art, etc, they both have amazing soundtracks and art/graphics. Futari has more shot types, if that matters to you at all.

God, take your heads out of your asses. No one here is saying Touhou is the best STG around. If fact, the general consensus is that the scoring system and gameplay are not as tight as other shmups like Cave's and such, but Touhou very, very far from been "shitty". A lot of players love the spell card system, the scoring from grazing and some of the unique scoring systems. It's a fun game and perhaps one of the best starters for the danmaku genre since the difficulty isn't as steep.

Some of you talk like you only dislike Touhou because a lot of people play it influenced by the fandom, characters or music. If you actually want to pick a shitty shumup then look at the Genesis and SNES library of games. There are plenty of those there, back when the genre was still considered popular a lot of bad ones were produced.
