5. No Chinaman must figure in the story.

I don't get the 5th Knox rule.

There musn't be a chinese person in a mystery novel?

Why?

It means "someone from a faraway land that appears for no good reason."

Wouldn't all the paranormal entities classify as chinamen then?

Because I don't find it funny when 10 people reply some silly answer, keeping a bad thread on top.

It doesn't appear because that rule will be broken by R07 soon.

Chinaman is a term that refers to a Chinese man, person, or in some cases, a racial term for any person of East Asian descent. Although the term originated in usage that was not originally offensive in intent, and was listed in older dictionaries,[1][2] its use evolved into a term often used against the Chinese and other Asians as they encountered increased discrimination and injustice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

No, they are going to use Van Dine for that purpose.

Don't LIE.

>> No.4936064

It means "no one can use measures that the reader can't possibly know about", in other words, "It doesn't become insolvable by feature something existant but foreign"

Arthur Conan Doyle fails this rule, oh, so greatly. He often does not even do any foreshadowing.

That rule also doesn't apply to Umineko because Witch Hunt Translation Group, it was made by fucking japanese and features references to Divina Comedia, Hitchhiker's guide, Dune, Film Noir, Magic the Gathering, et cetera.

Grobius Shortling's interpretation pretty much nails it, I think. I goes as follows:
"Do not use 'foreigners' or other aliens as major characters unless you have some real understanding of their culture and mind-set, and they have some relevance to the plot beyond exotic obfuscation."
