Anyone used this with good results? I'd really like to start learning more than the few keywords I pick up through Miike movies and anime... -.-'

Rosetta stone is horrible. Go get a book that actually teaches grammar.

how many rosetta stone threads do we have to suffer through?

Rosetta Stone, so good.

I assume this is TROLLAN, so to competently read a visual novel, I should learn Kanji right?

By this I mean I only want to learn how to read, not speak.

Entirely possible, since knowing what kanji mean doesn't automatically give you the ability to pronounce them.

second one contains rosetta stone and that "ditch kanji" thing...so that is the troll image

If i want to read visual novels, should I only bother learning Kanji though? I understand that Kanji is basically characters that represent words, and that Katakana is like English in that the letters represent sounds. Do visual novels contain a lot of Katakana? This is probably a dumb question but I'm kind of confused.

There's a four-digit-number of kanji and a two-digit-number of katakana. If you're going to go to the pain of learning kanji then katakana will seem trivial in comparison.

Oh, for the love of...

There are NO fucking shortcuts. Learning to speak will end up helping you learn to read, and vice versa. Learning to write kanji will help you read, and so on.

Sure, you may find that it isn't worth the time to memorize higher-level kanji at some point, or spend too much time on writing practice. But if you aren't sure what you can skip, then you aren't even close to having that luxury. It's a damn long road.
